View Full Version : Thump/Clunck Noise In Dually Rear Suspension
I carry a 9.5 ft Lance camper which weighs about
3200 lb. loaded.
My question is: When I have the camper in the
bed of my dually and pass over a bump....
lets say a speed bump, I hear a distinctive
thump/clunck, like my whole rear end is loose??
I've checked all parts underneath and all is
bolted on tight.
What might be causing the thump/clunck
noise when loaded and passing over bumps??
Anything I should look for or bring to the attention
of the dealer?

My first reaction is that the overload springs are thumping on the rubber stoppers. Overloads are at the top of the leaf spring pack (with the most severe arc) and at 3200 pounds are probably smacking against the bumpers and making all that racket.
You wouldn't normally hear them with the bed empty --- or with say, 4500 pounds.

Hey GreyPower......
I guess I need a bigger camper :D
Thanks
Check and makes sure the plastic friction disks are still in between the springs. I noticed every time I would hit a decent size pothole/bump that there was a "clunking" sond like something was loose and I noticed the driver side front disk had come out and that's what was making the sound - the two springs slapping together under load.

There is a new slip on rubber sleave that fits over the overload and replaces the flemsy plastic ones and prevents the clanking, just tell the dealer that you want the slip-on kind and they should know what your talking about.
Today I brought my 2002 Dually into the dealer to
have them install rubber insulators on the ends of
the helper springs.
The part number is 15604174 (Insulator 7.513)
I took pictures of them now installed. See photos at:

Hope this works.

They put the slide on type of isolator on my truck last week, just by looking at it it's a 100% improvement, mine use to bangm & clank with anymore than 700 lbs in the box.
