POWER FLUSH???

CAN YOU FOLKS THAT HAVE HAD A POWER FLUSH ON THE ALLISON TELL ME WHAT EXACTLY IS A POWER FLUSH HOW IT WORKS AND IF THERE ARE ANY DRAW BACKS TO IT??? THANKS A MILLION ;)

There was a previous post by one of the forums resident Allison gurus - IIRC it was BigAl - and he clearly stated that power flushing of the Allison 1000 series was NOT recommended. Possible damage to seals and O-rings. I'll try to find the link.

A power flush unit is attached to/from the tranny lines and uses the hydralic pressure of the draining trans fluid to 'push' new fluid into the tranny. Reported benefits include 90% plus new fluid in the trans as opposed to drain and refill.

I agree that a "power flush" is not a good idea. I flushed my tranny by the "drain/fill" method with Amsoil. I removed the top cooler line from the tranny and let it drain into a container while I maintained the level via the filler/dipstick tube at idle. I drained an filled the pan before starting, so all the fluid going through the pump was fresh. There was a definite color change at the drain line as the old fluid was replaced. The Amsoil fluid is a very bright purplish/red color, so it was easy to tell when it made its way through. I also overlapped by about 4 qts. to make sure that all the fluid possible was flushed out. I replaced the line, changed the filter and was back in business. It was easy and took less than an hour. Cheers.
