Frame Protective Coating

Well, I got the Bilsteins installed this past weekend. Not too bad a job excpet for the 35 deg. temps and blowing snow. Obviously, my driveway isn't the ideal place to do it. I did notice that I have a couple of small areas of surface rust where the waxy coating was scraped off the frame from when I rotated the tires a few weeks ago. How do any of you re-coat the frame in cases like this, if you even bother?
BTW, I did notice a modest improvement in the ride with the new shocks, but then maybe my OEMs weren't completely shot yet (8,000 miles). I'm guessing that a big advantage is that the Bilsteins will still be delivering good performance 75k - 100k miles down the road.

AMSOIL Heavy Duty Metal Protector works good... I used it to undercoat my 98 K3500, 2001 Malibu and 2003 2500HD. Water beads up on it just like wax.

Has anyone found a wax product similar to what's from the factory that we can apply?

Try LPS #3. It goes on a thick liquid and dries to a waxy finish. I use it on each hole I drill in my vehicles. :eek: This is GREAT stuff. You should be able to get it at hardware stores or well stocked auto parts stores.

Thanks for the info. It looks like LPS 3 is just the ticket. With a google search, I found that it's made by LPS Labs (lpslabs.com). Now I know what to look for at the local retailers.

Bass on tap, It's made by LPS. They are a full line industrial lubricant company. Their stuff comes in turquois colored bottles and cans. I buy it by the gallon, and put it in squirt bottles.

Do you know how the LPS-3 compares to the AMSOIL Heavy Duty Metal Protector? I'm always interested in something better. The AMSOIL product seems to be basically Cosmoline. I like it but it comes in an aerosol can. I like the idea of using a pump bottle.

Bill, I'm not familiar w/ the Amsoil product, but if its Amsoil its probably darn good. The LPS 3 comes in squirt bottles and gallons. Less wasted over-spray. I'll check into the Amsoil stuff, always looking for new/different things.

LPS 3 works VERY well. A little thicker (snotty) and softer than the MP-HD. Smells better too!

The LPS has Mil-spec and AV-spec numbers.

The MP will form a tougher layer, but is tough to build up.

The actual coating that G.M. and other OEM's use is called Daubert Rust Nox X-121B. It is available directly from Daubert. There was a G.M. TSB about this a while back, and I-Car covered it. Here is a link:
