Well, I changed the spin on filer today and I think I know what the answer is, but I'm going to ask it anyway. I didn't put the magnet on the filter, I put on the base of the housing and after tighenting it, I thougt what did it do that for and then the wife reminds me I'm it's geting late, so I left it for now. Should I switch it around right now, or is it still effective enough to leave until the next change?
I havn't done mine yet so I havn't seen it, barely 2000 miles. But, it isn't blocking any oil passage holes is it?
can say that when I changed mine the first time it had small metal shavings which I had to remove prior to reinstalling... haven't changed it a second time so I don't know if the initial break-in took care of all shavings or not
I'd put the magnet where it belongs. It's unlikely to hurt anything if you leave it off (or in this case - at the other end of the spin on filter), but it's not 'magneting' as designed. :D
I'm sure more than one of these magnets has been thrown away with the Allison spin on filter...
Woops! :D I thought when he said "base of the housing" he ment he put it on the trans. then put the filter on.

look at it this way....better on the inside the on the outside!!!!! like most of the dealers that dont know any better! I am sure that there are many tecs that know the right way but it all ways seams like the low man gets the easy jobs!
Would it stick to the HOUSING? Or rather the threads it (filter) spins on? If it is on the outside of filter or stuck to housing for the little bit lost fluid , I would do it right away .. Why take the chance .. If it 's on the outside of filter I wouldn't drive around with it there you'll loose it for sure ....... Couple bumps .... SEE'YA .......

Where have you guys found the filter for the Allison??
MNBowtie,
I think I mis-read your original post. I took it to mean that you put the magnet on the OUTSIDE of the filter.
If you put the magnet at the base of the filter housing on the tranny (over the spin on filter threads) and then put on the filter - the magnet should be near the same location but stuck to the tranny instead of the filter, I don't know if it would make any difference. My Bad :(
Could the magnet be blocking any openings here?

Mdag,
Sorry, I didn't state it more clearly in the original post. However, I think you have pointed out a good question "Could the magnet be blocking any openings here? like my opening statement. "I think I know the answer". Allison, must have put the magnet on the filter instead of the base for a good reason. So, now I'm off to and R&R. A lot can be said for doing it right the first time.

The passages will not be blocked by the magnet. They are outside the area of the magnet. The reason the magnet is on the filter is simple. The filter is steel, the tranny case is aluminium. The clearance between the socked up filter with the magnet and the case is very close. My guess would be that the magnet will find its way to the filter on its own in no time. The reason the magnet stuck up there in the first place is either due to the steel inlet pipe (where the threads are), or vacuum created by the seal with the fluid between the magnet and case. Either way, the attraction of the ferrous metal filter would be greater than that of the inlet pipe.
Bottom line is I wouldn't give it a second thought.

The magnet is in the same place regardless of whether you stuck it to the threaded tube on the trans or on the filter before you installed it. The width of the magnet takes up all of the space between the filter and the trans, so it doesn't matter which part you stick it to for installation...

OK, everyone thanks for your input:
I decided the best thing to do is put it back the way I found it. Here is what I found, after removing the filter the magnet was not on the filter (no surprise) it was right were I stuck it, around the stop nut on the threaded pickup tube. Since, I pulled such a bone head move. I will share how I did the R&R.
1. Pre-fill new filter and prep seal.
2. Loosen existing filter with a strap wrench.
3. Hold a small container around filter and loosen slowly to catch all the fluid. I then let it drip for 5 min.
4. Clean filter base, magnet and install MAGNET ON NEW FILTER, then tighten it has tight as my paws could.
5. I caught 1/3 cup of excess fluid during the removal, so added that much fluid back in
