Idle_Chatter posted on the 6600 forum something he did to help read his dipstick, and it got me thinking... (scary)
What have you guys done in the form of "garage mods" to make your life easier on you HD?
Some examples: SoMndmax drilled holes in his airbox to help it breathe (as did I)..
Fumoto valve for easier oil changes...etc., etc.
What have YOU done?

This isn't really a trick and I didn't do it, but had mine rigged for towing 4 down (Yes the Allison 4x4 can be towed 4 down).
They took off the recovery hooks and welded regular 2" receivers in their place and then made the cross bar that plugs into the receivers for the tow hookup.
Then they welded the recovery hooks to tubing that plugs into the receivers. I don't leave them on because they stick out too far and don't look as good as stock recovery hooks.
When needed my rear draw bar can slot right into either of them. Handy for moving a trailer, hooked to the front of the truck.
Now considering a winch that will plug into either the front or rear receivers.
NOW..whatever happened to that leaf blower option.

Not too many tricks, I *did* modify, install and pipe through my camper top a 43 gallon American Tank aux tank. That, the Amsoil air filter and the Amsoil dual remote oil filter are it so far. It got lost under Nuc Sub prattle over in 6600, but I've put up a folder of pictures of the dipstick mod in the "PICS" link below.

I also scuffed the fenderwalls above the rear wheels and sprayed some undercoating on them. Being that I have a white truck, it seemed I was CONSTANTLY washing these out to keep the truck looking clean. Now that they are black, not a problem anymore.
I also put in two of those "poplights" (you know, the ones that you see on infomercials) in my toolbox. Bought them at Walmart. Saved a LOT of time vs. a hardwire kit.

I built a custom CB antenna mount, which basically mounts the CB antenna opposite the radio antenna. When the CB antenna is removed, the bracket is just about unoticeable.

Well,
I installed the Fumoto valve.
Added a 12v power outlet in the rear bumper.
Insulated the A/C hose and fittings running over the engine with neoprene pipe insulation. Helps make the A/C more efficient for about $3
Installed Invinca-shield - really almost invisible and don't have a rock chip yet in 7500mi.
Sprayed undercoat in rear fenderwells.
The best one is: disconnected turbo wastegate hose from wastegate end and plugged it. Truck accelerates better, boost goes up to 30psi (if you're really pushin' it) and peak EGTs have gone down about 150*. This was totally free.
I DO NOT endorse this, am not telling anyone else to do it, take no responsibility, yada yada. It works for me.
I'm gonna try washing it next. Shiny sounds pretty cool.
Regards, Steve

I ordered and installed Tahoe sun visors in my D/A. They fit perfectly once you get the nerve to cut an extra hole in the headliner for the extended mount. The hole in already stamped in the double roof for the mount-----you just can't see it. They are lighted, and have the pull out extension on them. They look and work great, just like it was made for them, cause it was! Finally a way to get rid of the K-Mart visors that came in it!!!!

Since my interior is Graphite, I covered the hole believe it or not with the gray top of a Kodak film cannister (which I "shaved" the rim off) works very well. Any plastic item can be glued to cover the hole which is hardly visible once the new visors are installed. The Tahoe visors are identical except for an extended "hook" which holds the new lighted and heavier visor----also it hooks the right way, not backwards like the origional. Also, the Tahoe visors are double visors in that you have two---one when the sun is at the side window and another behind it to use straight ahead when using the visor at the side! I have not yet hooked up the lighted feature, but that will be a piece of cake--just have to run an "on with ignition" wire up the side pillars by the windshield from a wire in the dash. I found the hole location by loosely mounting the three screw cluster on the visor and judging the approximate location based on where the new hook was located. I then used a hat pin to probe for the hole in the sheet metal (the long pin won't damage the headliner if you are not properly lined up). When you find the hole simply use a razor blade or box cutter to cut the hole, then merely give a big push to the new visor and it will lock into place without removing the screw which comes with it. (This will make more sense when you see the new visor and the hole.) Hope this helps---unfortunately I'm having problems with my camera and can't send pics right now, if I get it fixed I will! NutNbut I'll be happy to show you the install anytime. Hope this helps you guys----it's a great mod. Oh yes, one other thing I did was to order another "Duramax Diesel" plaque like the ones on each door panel and put it on my tailgate to display proudly. Looks great!

Well I would call them improvements not tricks:
I have had my 1993 since new so I took a look at what I didn't like after 8 years of service & what I have found wrong with the 1972 LeMans I am restoring. I also sneaked a peak at BD's Duramax when it was about 6 months old.
1. Pulled the entire interior and undercoated all the floor boards.
2. Undercoated the frame & body.
3. Pulled the batteries and undercoated under them.
4. Undercoated the door sill up to the bottom of the door and under all four plastic fender flairs.
5. If you are only going to undercoat one thing on these trucks go to the front fender remove the bolt at the bottom pry open and fill that entire area with undercoat -- three layers of sheet metal meet here.
6. Mud flaps/box liner - going to go with spray on in near future.

The bracket is made out of a piece of 1"x1"x1/8" angle iron and a piece of 1"x1/8" flat iron. It bolts on to the two rearmost fender bolts. As for the plastic cover, I bought a second one (they cost about $15), and carefully cut the slot with my die grinder.
The bracket is actually quite stout, as I havent had any problems with it yet. I origionally made this bracket for my '99 Silverado, and it's had a 3' Fire Stick stuck in it for probably 40,000 miles.

Are the Tahoe and the jpcustoms the same Sunvisors, Whats the difference?, and also how much were the Tahoe Visors?
speedracer,
If one of Jason's kits are for an OEM accessory that was not offered on our trucks (but on the uplevel SUVs for example), he uses the GM parts so the install appears factory. These should be the same visors found in the uplevel GM interiors. Visit the web site in my post above and send Jason an email. He has always responded within 24 hours to any questions I've had - both pre and post sale - and will provide support for his items.
I installed the steering wheel audio control kit from him, and it is a GREAT kit, with all OEM parts and the best install instructions I've ever seen... http://forum.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Ole Hoss: I used three different types of undercoat, "Pro-Form" the rubberized version for under the floor mats, brush on for places I couldn't get to with the air gun & the spray on version for almost everything else.
My favorite undercoating is the black spray tar you buy in the roofing section of Home Depot.
I also like the cheapest brands in the auto stores. They seem to have that good tar quality. I don't like the rubberized types.
I have Harley Mudflaps and a Solargizer solar powered battery maintenance system on my 02. I had the Solargizer on my '96 F-250 PSD and when I sold it this year at 105k plus miles it still had the OEM batteries in it.

Can someone please post the GM part numbers for the grey colored Tahoe lighted sunvisors?
Matt B.
Do the Tahoe visors have the extension? If not does anyone know which GM visors with the extension will fit the 01 Chev. There just is not enough visor to block the sun on the side with the side full back. There are some aftermarket visors that I saw on a web site but the price was absurb. The GM ones maybe also but I would like to know.
Tricks? Well, maybe not tricks, but a K&N, a great sounding/flowing MagnaFlow 4", a Leer - Browning Special Edition cap (for winter & camping) and a B&W 30,000# turn-over ball goosenoeck hitch. Oh yeah, wheels & tires. See the picture.

Each morning when I walk out of the house, mine rolls over a couple of times then sets up and begs to be driven.

Added a 45 gallon fuel tank with a larger fill neck from Transfer Flow. Great addition and well worth the money.

Appreciate the info. Sounds like you must have gotten careless with the screwdriver. I would never do something like that. HA!!!!!!!!! Thanks a bunch.

dl537 (or anyone else with the Transfer Flow),
Do you need to put the truck on a lift to install the Transfer Flow tank?
This is the first mod I'm going to do on the '03 SB.
