View Full Version : Key chime driving you nuts?...unplug it!!!!
FormulaPro

I saw a post on unsoldering the chime for the door open with the key in the ignition and others brought up good points, like the chime having other functions. (Headlights on!)
I figured this out when I was doing my Polk Audio component speaker install.
Pull up on the drivers side door control panel, (it pops right out) and hang it by the connectors....
http://www.countrylakeresort.com/images/new/Drv_Door_ctrls.jpg
Now, disconnect the left connection and hold it so the connection end it facing you with the clip down.
http://www.countrylakeresort.com/images/new/connectors.jpg
http://www.countrylakeresort.com/images/new/connection_point.jpg
Remove the blue connection lock that secures the wire on the side with the connection clip.
I used a punch awl in the connection end of the connector and pressed the plastic clip up and the slid the metal connection right out of the connector.
Now the door can be open with the keys in the ignition without the annoying charm. AND you can plug it right back in whenever you want!
Every other chime function still works too!

FormulaPro, That is so cool. Now I am going to do this one, but I could not convince myself to remove the chime . So, when you remove this wire and you leave the keys in or the lights on the chim will work, right? I guess I will find out soon. Thanks for that excellant post. Jim

Only the Key chime will be disable. If you leave the lights on, the chime will still sound. It will also still sound if you use the dome override.

FormulaPro,
Great one! One more question. Does it effect the power on feature? You know, when you remove the keys, the radio keeps working till you open the door?

Two things: is that the wire the one that tells the truck that the driver's door is open, so does the interior dome light still come on and if it is then I think that the radio and windows will work until that function times out in 20 minutes. Maybe?

Here's the stitch...
If the radio is on and you pull the keys, the radio will stay on, even if you open the door. But, it will turn off after 20 mins. The dome light still lights up with door open.

Just tried this on mine and the dome light DOES NOT come on when you open the door...
Hope I got the correct terminal.
FormulaPro, does the correct terminal have two black wires in it?

Uggh! I was pulling the keys which does turn on the dome light. So...no, the dome light does NOT light up when you open the door. Might have to rethink this.
Cog...you do have the right terminal...two black wires. I wonder if it is only one of those wires that powers the chimes?
mdrag...if you are reading this, can you check the Helms and see if one of the black wires at that terminal location is for door chime?

I wondered the same thing, maybe only one wire needs to be removed.
FormulaPro, you first...Cut one and if it doesn't work let us know!
Haha...
FormulaPro,
I'll check the Helm's manual, but I can't do it until tomorrow.

FormulaPro,
Checked out the Helm's manual to see what I could find out for you. The connector you are holding should be the WINDOW/DOOR LOCK SWITCH DRIVER connector C1, 12 way BLACK connector (4 door). There is another description of C1 listed as EXCEPT 4 DOOR. The manual does not explain whether the extended cab is considered a 2 or 4 door.
There is a C2 connector described for the 4 door, GREY 12 position connector that is not listed for the 2 DOOR - so since there are two connectors in you picture for the window switches, the extended cab probably uses the 4 DOOR configuration.
Looking at your picture of the connector C1 (12 way BLACK),
www.countrylakeresort.com/images/new/connection_point.jpg (http://www.countrylakeresort.com/images/new/connection_point.jpg)
http://www.countrylakeresort.com/images/new/connection_point.jpg
TERMINAL A is BOTTOM ROW far LEFT, TERMINAL F BOTTOM ROW far RIGHT, TERMINAL G TOP ROW far LEFT, and TERMINAL M TOP ROW far RIGHT :
A = ORANGE CIRCUIT 2140 BATTERY + VOLTAGE
B = ORANGE CIRCUIT 2140 BATTERY + VOLTAGE
C = LT BLUE CIRCUIT 195 DOOR LOCK CONTROL
D = LT GREEN CIRCUIT 170 PWR WINDOW MASTER SW RT REAR UP SIGNAL
E = PURPLE CIRCUIT 171 PWR WINDOW MASTER SW RT REAR DW SIGNAL
F = BLACK CIRCUIT 1850 GROUND
G = BROWN CIRCUIT 2409 INT PARK LAMPS SUPPLY VOLTAGE
H = BROWN CIRCUIT 2409 INT PARK LAMPS SUPPLY VOLTAGE
J = WHITE CIRCUIT 194 DOOR UNLOCK CONTROL
K = DK GREEN CIRCUIT 168 PWR WINDOW MASTER SW LT REAR UP SIGNAL
L = PURPLE CIRCUIT 169 PWR WINDOW MASTER SW LT REAR DW SIGNAL
M = BLACK CIRCUIT 1850 GROUND
In your pic, the terminal you are referring to is F -> a GROUND wire.
The GREY 12 position C2 connector has terminal descriptions for power window motor, power window signals, power window lock, and grounds. TERMINAL F (holding the connector the same way) is for RAP [X] FUSE SUPPLY VOLTAGE DARK GREEN CIRCUIT 1001. RAP = retained accessory power.
I did not see anything in the terminal descriptions for those switches that looked useful to disable the chime - the ground wire you found likely is part of the chime circuit. http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/frown.gif

Guys, there is another way to get rid of the "open door" chime.
READ HERE TO LEARN HOW (http://forums.pickuptruck.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=11&t=003852)
I did this on my '01 1500HD. The two drawbacks are it will allow the driver-side door to lock with the key in the ignition, and I have found that when you turn the truck off the interior lights don't turn on when you pull the key out of the ignition. The lights WILL turn on when you open the door though, so no big deal. http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/smile.gif Everything else works like normal. Radio turns off when you open the door, windows & radio work for 20 minutes after turning truck off, battery run-down protection still works (I accidentally left the dome light on overnight), headlight chime, etc., etc.
A permanent solution to get rid of the chime alltogether can be done like this (did it to my '99 Silverado):
Remove the dash panel that is below the steering wheel and you will see a black box with three colored wire loom connectors plugged into it. The noise maker is inside of that box. Unplug the connectors and remove the box. Open the box up and you will see a round, silver, Quarter-sized thing on the circuit board, that is the speaker. It is soldered in and can't be unplugged. I got a butter knife and wedged it underneath and gently pried up and broke it off. No more ding ding ding ding. Ever. http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Up!^^^
sooty, and formulapro--
WHY do you even turn your headlights on??? This completely baffles me, we have had the truck since 10-30-02 NEVER turned them on-- our 99 Z-71 we got 02-17-99 and NEVER turned those on- ?? what am I missing here? with the 99 w/ fog lights, the fogs were on for daylight, then at dusk the headlights and tail lights came on- with the 01, the headlights are on at daylight, and the tail lights pop on at dusk,,, I never have touched the button not even ONCE??
someone shed some light on this please?
Brandy
[This message has been edited by MudNurI (edited 01-11-2002).]
MudNurI, I turn my lights on quite often when it is too light for the PE cell to activate the auto on circuit. Example: When we have a heavy downpour and the traffic is heavy and moving at 50 to 60 mph ,the road wash is such that you have very limited visibility, that's when I want my head lights and tail lights on, not just those half lite driving lights. Anyway it is possible to have your headlight switch on and forget it. That's when the chime is good to have. I just put a piece of black tape over mine to lower its db level. Brandy do you need anymore light shedding? lol Jim

I never have a problem leaving my headlights on. I don't need a chime to tell me to turn off the lights. My truck has "indicator lights" on all sides of the truck.... tail lights, marker lights, headlights. When I get out of the truck and all the "indicator lights" are lit up, then I know that I have to turn the light switch off!
Wow, the good old days of picture posting.
So does anyone know how to disable it on a 2003?
I too would like to have my door open and the radio on...
And there are two volume settings for the 2003 chime: Loud and Very Loud.
