Lug nut torque

Can someone tell me the correct foot-pounds of torque needed for the lug nuts on a 2002 3500 dually with the OEM stock steel wheels? They don't seem to give that information in the owner's manuals. Thanks.

the service manual says 175 lb ft for dual wheels and 140 lb ft for all single wheels.

Back to the top....

During my rotate & balance today I found the following:


Dealer 1 - don't go over 100 ft lbs
Dealer 2 - 120 ft lbs 'I think' he says
Dealer 3 - 140 ft lbs

The owners and shop manuals state 140 for singles (doesn't specify steel or PY0 - Aluminum)

The Sears store last time I went said 90 ft lbs, today it's 140 ft lbs.

What B.S. this is !!! All I want is to maintain the truck properly and even dealers can't agree.

Anybody else use a different number?

I plan on going with 120 ft lbs and waiting to see what others are doing.

Just got new Centerline wheels a couple weeks ago(Comet III's, 16 X 8). The tire shop (reputable) torqued them to 100, as he said they do for all 8 lug singles. I thought it should be more, so I read the paperwork that came with the new wheels. It recommends 85 to 95 (??). I left them at 100, confident I had sufficient overkill. Now I'm not so sure.

175 on the duals sounds right. I've done that for years, but only on steel wheels. Don't know what aluminum would be.

On a closing note...

Thanks for the information....it is the same for Dually's...Ooops Dooley's...as it has been since 93-94 I believe. Even with Alcoa's the Torque requirement is the same. Hopefully none of you experience a road side repair and try and take off the lug nuts with a 3/8 drive and 9" extension....;D

But seriously now, this is a serious matter, that very few dealerships or tire shops adhere to. I've never seen a torque wrench at any tire shop!

I'd switch shops if they do not use torque wrenches. Improperly torqued lug nuts are a potentially HUGE problem. They even have them thar tork renches in OK. http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

The reason you don't see different torques for the PYO Aluminum wheels, as you usually will for alloy wheels, is that the PYO's have steel inserts at the holes, for the lug nuts to torque down on.

Could you put DUAL lug nuts on each rim. (16 lugs) Just thinking if 8 is good then 16 would be better!

In Ontario, were we have all the Laws to protect us from ourselves, to install or mount a truck tire you must complete a provincial coarse first. They state that over torque is worse than under torque, because in a over torque situation lugs become brittle and can snap off under stress. All installations must be torqued. Then after installation you must return after a 100 km to have them retorqued. When I had tires put on my car, at Wal-Mart, the mechanic torqued them then the counter person went in to the garage and rechecked all his torques again, and I had too sign, that I would return to have them retorqued after 100 km. My dealer clearly stated that 140 lb was the number for my truck.

I wanted to bring this issue up again. Some of the
contributors have been insistant that the torque
be at 175 ft lbs, however I just had my 2002 dually
tires rotated at 7500 miles at the dealer. I made
him check with GM and they say that the "new style"
lug nuts should be torqued to 140 ft lbs....no more.

I don't know when the "new style" lug nuts
came into production, but since my truck is 3
months old.... I'm going with their current
recommendation of 140 ft lbs.

Does anyone have the Helms manual for the 2002
models?

I have my 2500 HD at 140 as per manual spec. but if you are in serious doubt as to what they are just check them BEFORE you take them off. I usally just set the torque wrench to 10 lbs below the lowest setting I have been given and take it up in 10 lb increments untill the nut turns -- check several nuts.

Although this would not have worked on my Wife's car a while back, because after some warrenty work three wheel nuts were left loose -- people wonder why I do all the non-warrenty work on my cars and trucks.
