View Full Version : Chrysler to sell Mercedes "Freightliner" diesel va.
[quote]DaimlerChrysler is counting on Sprinter product attributes, such as Mercedes-Benz engineering and safety, an independent front suspension, a five-speed electronically controlled transmission and a five-cylinder 2.7-liter common rail diesel engine. The same engine is offered on the Mercedes-Benz C- and E-class cars and the M-class sport-utility in Europe, with better fuel-economy than the competition

I'll beleive it when I see it.
I think the FEDS are afraid of a GRAPE JUICE/fuel tank epedemic.

Check out http://www.sprintersavvy.com/home.html for info on the Sprinter vans. I have a brochure from Freightliner of New Hampshire ( www.fnh.com (http://www.fnh.com) ) at work, and these things look like the ultimate work/cargo vans. There are no obstructions in the floor, the doors open 270 degrees, you can get sliding side doors on both sides, and the high roof models have 73" of headroom. Seat kits are available for use as a passenger van as well, and with the high headroom models you can reach any seat without havign to stoop over. I'm not a big fan of DaimlerChrysler, since it seems to be 95% Daimler and 5% Chrysler (plus I just don't like the idea of a foreign company owning an American one) but these vans sure look like they'd be much better than the E350s my company uses now.

I have already seen two of these vans in use on SE Pa.
FedEx, Linwood, Pa. has them.

You guys are absolutely right. FED/EX is useing those vans here in NY also.I understand that 60 percent of the passenger vehicles sold in europe are Diesel powered.Cherokee's,Dakota's,Range Rovers,Nissan's to name a few.VW has shown emmissions is not a problem for the US market. So why don't Americans demand the choice of Diesel power, economy, longevity in our commuter vehicles?

I'm with you all the way.. My suggestion is to right a letter (or more) to GM about your interest in diesel powered vehicles.. I've always heard "He who yells the loudest, normally gets what he wants." So my question is, how loud can you yell?????

One option that I'd like to see in a diesel pickup is an engine optimized for fuel economy. Everything's going towards "more power, more power, more power" but wasn't the 6.2L first introduced as a way to get the power(?) of a 305 and twice its mileage? Don't get me wrong, power is definitely a good thing - but who needs 300hp and 500+ lbf-ft torque for a daily driver or commuter? Something like a Cummins 3.9BT (perhaps with an aluminum head and bellhousing to save weight) should easily get 25mpg if set to give 90-100hp and 250 lbf-ft torque through 2000rpm - and these power levels would be more than enough to move any 1/2 ton pickup with the flow of traffic. Use a 4L60E or NVG3500 for the light weight and overdrive and axle gearing in the 3.08-3.42 range, and it'd easily be able to cruise at 75mph.
Where did I get this idea? From a friend who swapped a 3.9BT and TH400 out of a bread truck into his 84 C2500 w/liftgate. It's not 100% finished, but he's already had it on the road, and it'll walk away from a Powerstroke off the line. I'm sure there are other engines in the same class that weigh less, and one of these might be a good idea as well.

We want big trucks and SUV's that get 35 mpg and plenty of pep.
Is that out of the question?

well, 35mpg may be a little unreasonable, and "pep" is best determined by the driver, but I don't see any reason why an efficient, "lightweight" 4-cylinder diesel engine in a 5,000lb +/- 1/2 ton truck can't deliver around 30mpg highway with the proper gearing and still be able to beat a city bus or garbage truck off the line. My 6.2L gets about 23mpg on interstate trips @ 75mph and with 800lbs of axles & chains in the bed it still gets 18mpg during mixed city/highway driving, so I don't see why a 90-100hp 4-cyl Cummins (for example) with EFI can't top that by at least 5mpg. When my friend finally gets his GMC done I'll ask him what he's getting for mileage - I would be very surprised if it wasn't at least 5mpg better than my 6.2, with about the same performance.

A 4l 4 cylinder TD should be able tomove a pickup around. Heck, Isuzu, Mitsubishi, Hino, Nissan, have been using 120-150HP 3.9, now 175hp 4.9L 4 bangers in the class 4-5 cab overs for how many years?
Not every one needs a 300HP motor, a good lower HP'd motor with the correct tranny gear option's, will move what many of us need for business purposes around.
My Navistar MDT has a 175 hp N/A 7.3 in it, along with a Spicer 7 sp, while granted a little slow on the freeway, it does move up to 25-30K around with more than enough poop, as long as I'm not trying to go over about 50-55mph. Which is not very often.
