View Full Version : Piston shave
Does anyone out there know how much needs to be shaved off of a 6.5 piston to make 18:1 Compression with a stock head gasket?
Thanks

I don't know if it can be done. The 18:1 pistons you can purchase have modified rods and wrist pin locations which basically moves the piston down in the bore.
If you shave a stock turbo piston, you ruin the ceramic coating, requiring that you re-coat it.
It also makes the piston top much thinner which is a bad thing as well.
I've looked into shaving pistons, and I know a guy down the road from me who's done it, but he's not sure exactly how much he lowered the compression.
I just wish those 18:1 pistons weren't so expensive!!

are the stock 6.5's a flat top or do they have some funky dish on them?

Forget the shave, you would loose the Hi Tec coating.
