View Full Version : tonneau covers...
I'm shopping for a soft tonneau cover, and am looking at the Extang Full Tilt model. A link is below, prices are running about $350 for the snapless (velcro), and $300 for the snap style.
Anybody have experience with these...or other brand suggestions...or any thoughts regarding soft tonneaus?
Rigid fiberglass and full caps are too pricey, plus the roll up ability of a soft lets me take it along with the fiver.
THANKS!

I have a Tonneau cover with the velcro seal and it`s been a pretty good friend. It is convenient because when you unhook the 5th wheel you roll it out and run your thumb along the velcro to seal it and you have some element of security.I did`nt buy the metal roll-up because of ice and snow problems. This cover has seen 3 trucks and will probably see more. Takes short time to install with 9/16 wrench. Don`t know trade name but has an 800# listed on it if you would like to check it. Please advise.

I have a Truxedo which is a soft rollup with velcro down the sides. Been very happy with it. It runs about $400. I like the fact that it only takes 30 sec to roll up and it doesn't take up any space in my shortbed. The Retrax has a canister that takes up about 10" at the front of the bed. That 10" is pretty valuable when I try to close the tailgate with my Polaris Sportsman 600 in the back.

I have a good friend with a FullTilt Snap model and he loves it. It is simple to use and the bed stays dry. In fact, I just bought one yesterday on his recommendation.

I have an Access roll cover on my truck and I love it. No rails to contend with and the cover stays fairly tight.

I have had a few different ones with the trucks I've owned. My brother has the Ex-tang with the snap buttons, and after 3 years looks pretty ratty. I have had a couple of SportMasters tonneaus, both with the snap buttons. The oldest one is nearly five years old and still looks great! They were a few bucks more, but a solid product, with a rigid frame system.

Is there anyone here that is not happy with the re-trax covers? Other than loosing 10 inches of bed space, is there any other drawbacks a person should be aware of?, snow,ice,ect... Thanks Don't use the bed for more than small stuff and 5vr hitch. I have a 7k dump trailer for all the rough stuff!!
I have had a Downey SST cover on since the truck was new in Dec 2000 and have had zero problems. I have lived in snowy Virginia and sunny Hawaii and it still fits great. I have the GM plastic bed rail caps sandwiched between the aluminum cover frame and the bed. It works great.

I have a Retrax that I
Does anyone know if there is a tonneau cover available with a cut out for a gooseneck trailer?
I have just ordered a trailer and I would like to be able to keep the tarp on the truck with the trailer attached. I know it wouldn't be waterproof but I'd still be able to carry goods without them blowing away.
If I was to cut my current tarp ( an Extang )would a one foot diameter hole be enough to allow clearance for the saftey chains etc? :D :D :D
I've had excellent luck with my Retrax cover and intend to install one on my '05 soon. I have had it freeze, but that depends on conditions. Parking indoors, if I drive out into snow, of course the cover is warm and it melts. Parking outside in mixed precip can also freeze it. If the cover is cold and it snows, then no problem.
