View Full Version : Schefenacker Tow Mirrors (ttt mirrors) feedback?

Anyone have these extendable tow mirrors(ttt-mirror.com)installed? I have read the forum mirror threads looking for a good quality tow mirror that will work with a 102" wide trailer, and these look the best so far. Per forum member Joe Pool, each mirror normally sticks out 17 1/2 inches from the side of the vehicle, and can extend out an additional 4 1/2" to a total of 22" (these are the unlighted ones). For my truck, that would give me an overall mirror-to-mirror width of about 113" when extended. Sounds like that would work well with a 102"er. They also have a convex smaller mirror built in. Maker claims to be the world's largest manufacturer of exterior mirrors - based in Australia.

I am looking for feedback on them.
1. How do you like the mirrors?
2. Would you buy them again?
3. Did you get the light option, and if so, do you feel it was worthwhile?
4. Any problems/dislikes?
5. Do you think they stick out too far during non-towing use?
6. Do they work well for towing?
7. Any problems installing if you did it yourself?

I would sure like to see them in person before purchasing because they aren't inexpensive($400-$550 per set depending upon options), but don't know where I would find them around Disneyland in CA.

Thanks very much for any feedback!!

I am wondering if the Schefenacker mirrors have enough surface area that makes them any better than the stock towing mirrors. Just looking at them on their web site it seems they don't extend vertically far enough to see the rear wheels when backing up. Is that a problem? Thanks ernie.

St. Louis must be a hotbed for these mirrors. It's where I'm at and I got them also.

My answers are exactly the same as Joe Pools.

I was concerned about them sticking out too far, but once I installed them, no worries.

Took me about 4 hours to install them, most of that time was the lights. Directions excellent, I had only 1 minor problem doing it myself. The directions said that for pre 2003 Silverado's, connect up the passenger marker light on a connector in the passenger side fuse box. My 2002 2500HD did not have that connector. But, it was an easy matter to extend the wire to the other side and hook it up with the driver's side marker light. I emailed schefenacker on that and they said they just became aware of that issue last week and was in the process of updating their documentation for the web. GM must have changed mid-year or something.

Joe,

Thanks for the response!! Sorry to hear about all the work you are doing. Hope things lighten up for you.

I had read and researched quite a bit, and finally bought the Schefenackers. Installed them today with assistance from my 12-year old son.

Mirrors are terrific!! I agree with your response.

Looks real good. They are better looking without the chrome. I may have a pair of Lucerix for sale soon.

The website for the mirrors says that the electric mirrors do not include a kit for installing them in place of manual mirrors. Has anyone done this? What is involved?

I have a theory of why I didn't have an orange connector as per directions on the passenger side. I wonder if only the trucks with the marker lights across the roof have this connector? That would explain it.

Just installed mine yesterday - I have the orange connector on the passenger side and was able wire pass. clearance light there with no problems. I have an 02 2500HD without factory clearance lights.

So much for that theory... Thanks for checking. Mine definitely doesn't have that orange connector on the passenger side.

If you have the heated mirrors and don't have rear defrosters:

From: craig.herriot@schefenacker-usa.com

Dear Ryan,

Our apologies for the confusion.

If you do not have the rear defrost option on your truck, the heater function will need to be 'hard wired' into your vehicle. That is, the white wire that exists the wiring harness on the mirror will need to be spliced into a wire in the vehicle that offers constant power. We recommend that a professional fitter complete this part of your installation to ensure that the wiring that is being spliced can handle the additional 10 amps (5 per mirror) of current draw. This will mean that the heater element on the mirror will remain permanently on.

As most vehicle types have different wiring configurations, and changes to the vehicle have occurred between model years, we recommend that a professional installer complete this step.

We hope this helps.

Kind regards,

Craig.

Drove my truck with new ttt-mirrors first time today. Great field of vision, totally eliminates blind spots. Very solid and stable. Only one thing - my driver side mirror has a shrill whistle at 35 mph (no, it's not other drivers admiring my new mirrors). I'll have to spend some time trying to track that down and eliminate it. Can hear it inside cab with windows up (and with them down too - however, not much over the sound of my teeth chattering today - -12F this morning!). Goes away both above and below 35 mph. Anyone else experience this? Mirrors are retracted when it happens.

Minor problem to be overcome considering how well they work and good they look.

Take care, Don

I had my first journey with the TTT mirrors this weekend too. Great field of vision and are very solid. I too noticed a whistle from the DS mirror. Except mine was at about 65 MPH with the window down couldn;t hear it with the windows up and radio off. (it was 64 degrees on Sat. and 18 now) I put my had out in front of the mirror in diferent locations and was able to get the whistle to stop. Now I just got to pinpoint where it is coming from. I can lie with it though cause these things are great. Much bette than the Lucerix I replaced.

Received mine TTT's Friday and installed them this weekend. Wow, these are great mirrors. I am totally pleased with them.

Instructions were very good. One point for those who have yet to install them. Regarding the step in which you fish a coat hanger or similar through the flex tube linking the door with the body of the truck...when they say, "when removing the rubber cover from the truck body, do not remove the rubber cover from the teflon collar..."

Whatever you do, don't remove the teflon collar from the rubber cover. You can not replace the rubber cover around the teflon collar while in-place. Its impossible. I had to disconnect all the connectors at the fuse box and reconnect them after pulling them through and feeding them back through the hole in the door after putting the rubber collar and teflon collar back together. Whew!!!

I just noticed this evening that the running lights on my TTT mirrors are hooked to the dash lights and dim with the dash light control

I hooked the mirrors up exactly as per the instructions but I would think they should be hooked to the running lights and not the dash lights ???

I'mm pull the dash apart tomorrow and see if I can hook up to another wire.

Anyone else noticed this with the mirrors ???

I pulled the dash apart and disconnected the wire for the running lights on the TTT mirrors from the switch and ran a wire up the "A" piller to the cab lights, the mirror lights no longer dim with the dash lights :D

Hmmm....

Just checked my mirrors and the led's don't dim with the dash lights...

Steve,

Just checked my lights -- they work properly (no dimming). I wired as the instructions indicated.
My truck is an '02.

Steve,

I check my mirrors the other night and they do not dim with the dash lights.

My 2002 did not have the connector on the right side, so I had to connect both sides to the left IP fuse panel.

These mirrors are rock solid, with no whistle.
