View Full Version : JK'S light kit......
What can I say that hasn't been said .....The setup is fabulous ......From the minute I opened the package and seen it I knew it was a good choice....The harness is so OEM looking you would swear it came from GM.....I opted for the bulbs too....Install was simple and self explanatory....Routed threw the passenger side front of radiator over to the drivers side.....I removed the airbox, and bottom tray, and found a great spot to mount relays....Used my 3/8 angle air drill but a cordless would fit in the area, air is just wicked fast, chips were flying....Picked up current at the alternator.....I picked up the grounds on the first fender bolt under the rubber hood flap, completely out of site....Very simple and well worth the effort for the end results was better then my expectations.....I did the install in the cold, it was snowing, but it was easy enough to bare the cold fingers and get it done.....The harness really is worth it I should of purchased a while ago and not screwed with the el-cheap'o stuff it was completely worthless in comparison....Hoot,Mdrag,Indingo you may commence the I told you so any time...... tongue.gif I took some PICS but man it was cold.....
Those hesitating when you see the OEM harness in the PICS you'll be amazed .... The PIC on John's site doesn't do it justice.....I took some PICS of the lights on look how the low beams drown the PIAA FOGS...... Plus look at the house behind and when I hit the HIGH BEAMS you no longer can see the silhouette of the house in the back ground !!!!!!
One pleased,

What'd we tell you Mackin.
What made you finally go for it?

How does this set up work with a plow light harness.
Basically the four connectors(oem) that are diconnected from my bulbs. I connect one side to the plow harness and the otherside gets taped off. Then the plow harness connects to all four bulbs and runs front to the plow light bulbs.
Can JK's set up work like/with this. Any Benifit that I would recieve( of coarse when the plow is off and not in use?
I really like the idea but have waited cause I am not sure it would work and or benifit me...
Thanks

I recently had a problem with my JK light kit. Here is what happened and how I fixed the problem.
The lights were installed for several months before the problem surfaced. One night the brights would not work. JK told me to switch the relays to see if I had a bad relay. When I tried the brights they worked, so did the low beam. I guess I had a bad connection.
So if anyone has this problem try the switch.
mackin,
Glad to hear that you 'saw the light' and got the real deal ;)
My only complaint with Kennedy's harness/bulb set-up - it is depressing to turn the HBs off
hoot
I wanted the four light system and I tried that POS thing I bought, again, and it didn't work as advertised......I spent more time installing uninstalling, then putting the Kennedy Diesel harness in......Sad ain't it?????
With all the testimonials here about JK'S harness, and with not one saying the harness wasn't up to par I new it had to be worth it deep down....Like any consumer you always look for a bargain I was "wrong".... YOU do get what you pay for in this case, as I did, with the crap prior to this 4 lamp bright harness....The real bargain to get was on this purchase, I should of gotten JK'S harness in the first place, not try the cheap chit on a truck of this value..... It's plug and play no splicing , beautiful......

I guess you decided that since you just spent more money on oil, might as well break loose and get on the bandwagon. I think you have beaten yourself up enough over this.
REC06, The harness works fine with my Western plow set-up. I carefully numbered all of the headlight and plow harness plugs before disconnecting them then followed the directions and everything worked right on the first try. I can't remember if all 4 lights are lit on the plow frame but I'll let you know next time it is hooked up.

Don't think there is anything else that could be said about Kennedy's light harness.
The fact is its the best and its been said over and over right here. His service is number 1, his products are number 1 & he is number 1.
Looks like that makes him NUMBER 1 all around at least in my book.
a very happy Kennedy customer....

Hey Mac,
You mean the truck actually STARTED when you were done???? tongue.gif
Along the way, I HAVE had a couple of issues, but minor. Poor grounds/connections, and bent pins are the common ones. Also, the 4 lamp diodes have caused grief. It seems that the early/late designation is insufficient for some so I'm changing it to: Silverado-Sierra or CK-Classic. I don't know if it will help, but can't hurt. I actually think that a lot of people just plug it in any direction w/o reading the insert. I've had some diode plugs come back with a failed diode, but it is impossible to tell if it was bad from the start, or if reverse operation killed them.
Mackin,
Installing JK booster harness this morning and have one question?
How does the diode connection on JKs harness work? Does it connect to the existing wire harness and if so where is it connected? Just a description of what you do w/this connector would be greatly appreciated. Or do I just plug brightener module into the diode connector on JKs harness using the new side?
Thanks again for the help!

There is a socket in the JK harness that the doide gets plugged into. The diode sets the polarity of the switching. The newer trucks '01 and up use ground side switching while the "classic" trucks use hot side switching.
John
Mackin,
What gives with the Mocking bird PICs????
John,
Installed the diode/brightner module per your suggestion and instructions from JK (this is what I think I did). Used the new position for brightener module. Low beams work and high beams work, but high beams do not also turn on low beams? If I have the brightener module reversed will this damage system?
Weather cold front going through area now, as soon as it stops raining will go back and check module position.
John
It started RIGHT up !!!!!!! No screwing around,no blown ECM fuses like with the garbage kit I had previously attempted to use......Your Diode directions if read works as printed....Lights powered right up......BRIGHTLY ,helped with the tool clean up..... ;)

Stage 1
I wish I would of takin a PIC of the diode when plugged in but it was cold.....Sorry....Now it's under airbox, and nicely covered, not very accesible,I might be able to get to it through the headlight assembly if I can I'll put up a PIC.....It is a great place to mount.....
I would switch it around, the diode .....John will get ya squared away if your still having a problem ......Good luck.....

Mackin, you were blowing ECM FUSES?? Yikes...
Glad to hear you like the kit. I've had mine on my truck for over a year now, with no issues. Make sure the grounds are good, and you'll be fine.

What happened to your truck? What in the world is all over your truck? I was looking at the pictures of the lights and in one of them (P1010009.JPG) it looks like your truck has a very bad case of dandruff. :D
At this time it is 52 degress, sunny clear skies and no wind.

Also just completed the install of JKs headlight wire harness, everything works great! My problem was that I had the diode module installed wrong. Switched the module and everything works great. Hint use JKs wire colors code vs physical connector shape. Will try it out tonight when it get dark. :D :D
Used JKs and Mackins notes! Installed new wire harness infront of radiator under the top of the rad. core support also. Used the new plastic holders w/adhesive tape to hold harness to the under side of top core support. This way keeps harness off of the hot radiator.
It was very easy to install with a few tools .
Mackin, thanks for your notes on how you did yours.
Stage 1,
Did you have the diode reversed at first? I'm trying to figure out just how people are reversing them OR if some of the diodes were assembled incorectly.
JK
I sent you an email reguarding the headlight harness diode.
Hope it helps

Hi John,
Used instructions that I downloaded from your web site. The physical shape of the connections for the diode did not match the wire harness color codes e.g. the black w/white and yellow wires were reversed in your harness vs what the instruction show. Used the physical shapes to decide how to install on initial setup(which did not work). I reinstalled the diode plug per the wire color directions on your instructions and that worked. :D

Had my Kennedy harness installed today by a local independent shop I use often. At first it didn't turn on all the lights as it should. Called J. Kennedy & found out that there was a bent pin in a connector. Now it appears to work as it should.
After reading the above comments, could it still not be working properly even if the low beams are on at the same time as the highs? I'm not sure since I don't have the instructions any longer to check the diode.
If the lows come on independently, and stay on with the highs, it is working properly.
From there, it is a good idea to ohm the ground terminals back to the battery negative posts to make sure the connection is good...
I GUESS I WAS A DIODE KILLER......AFTER A CALL AND A PACKAGE ALL I SEE IS THE BRIGHTER SIDE OF THINGS..........HEY MAC YOUR MAIL WORKING?.......... :D
I don't know guys. My lightkit included a little plastic bag, inside of which was the diode and a piece of paper with a diagram of exactly which end of the diode should be plugged in. The drawing clearly indicated to me which end to use.
So I can't relate with the difficulties some are having.

For those of you who have upgraded your wiring harness, have you
experienced any loss in bulb life with the higher voltages they now are
subjected to?? I know there were some early problems but that may have been
attributed to some bulbs of questionable quality.
