Michelin finally came through with a bigger size tire for us 'big' truck guys, after years of the 265 being the biggest tire offered. (heard about it first from a post here recently.)

i had 4 of these new tires mounted yesterday. neither dealer nor distributor were aware of them until i gave them this info recieved in response to a query to Michelin's website customer service:

"The Michelin LTX M/S in the LT285/75R16 size has just been launched. Your Michelin dealer can now order this tire under the Michelin part number 78276."

the ride is improved compared to the 265E's i was already running (for the past 4 years on 3 different trucks) almost certainly because of the lower pressure. they are rated at 3305# each at 65psi versus 3415# for the 265's and 3305# for the 245's both at 80psi.

the 285's measure 11.3" wide and 32.8" tall
the 265's measure 10.7" wide and 31.8" tall
the 245's measure 9.8" wide and 30.7" tall

i do have some rubbing issues. i let the tire guy talk me into putting them onto the baja's (just under 4.5" backspace) instead of the eagles (i measure 5" backspace). i trimmed the airdam a bit but it will require some more to make it work right. the front wheel liner needs to be pulled forward a bit too.

as they sit now they put some spray up the front fender and onto the door. i will have them mounted on the other rims and see if that takes care of the issue.

wish i had some pics, but my truck is so filthy right now from all the snow and salt that i'd be too embarassed to let anyone see it.

for those who have not run these (ltx m/s) tires, plan on 65,000+ mile life, a quiet ride, great wet and dry handling and decent mud/snow performance. unfortunately they do make you pay for it, however.

checked with two places and got about the same answer...

$200 each mounted balanced road hazard and tax.

ouch.

then again, 265E's are running $180 these days (used to be around $160 a couple years ago) and the difference in ride quality and looks is worth it i figure.

just watch it with the throttle if you're running a power box! that's expensive smoke...

I can't find the 285's anywhere. I called Michelin today and they told me their warehouses are empty. They could not confirm that any had even been shipped although it appears that some have been.

If anyone anywhere near FL finds a dealer with some in stock, please post the location here.

matt-max, who was your dealer?

tieman stewart tire in bloomington. he checked to see if they existed (he hadn't heard of them either)and found them last saturday and got them in on monday.

discount tire (i think that's their name) in indy said he could order them for $200 each. they do mail order too.

love the ride...way smooth, sits up higher but not anyway near as bad as it thought for entry and exit ease. i'm 6'2"ish

the 265s are awesome too and will fit way better on the stock rims.
