View Full Version : Cell Phone - Dealer Installed Built-in
My previous 99' truck had a dealer installed GM built in hands free cell phone as part of the consule lid. It was real nice used the radio speakers. Is this option still available for 2003s as a dealer install, anyone have this option? do you like it? Is the truck/radio wired for built-in hands free phone?
Looked through the GMC 2003 brochure and web site, did not see anything on built-in hands free cell phones.
Wasn't ON*STAR an option???? That is a hands free setup with the exception of you can't pick you service provider....So it's pricy.....

Hi Mackin,
Thanks for the reply.
The On-star is an option on the new truck, I though it was only to talk to the on-star staff? I do not know anything about the new On-star setup and if can be used to make cell phone calls if your purchase that service from them? I will go to their web site and check it out.
Hi Mackin,
You were correct, went to On-star web site, personal calling is an option you can purchase, and it is very expesive, $90 for 300 minutes!
I sure liked the old hands free system on 99' truck, for $19 / 400 minutes. I will keep checking to see if non GM phone is available w/capability to act hands free through the radio.
Isnt that 33 cents a minute and no roaming or long distance charges to and from any where in the USA and Canada.
I just quoted an Onstar rep. if true that is cheap up here.

ok heres my .02 look on the driver side where the brake box hooks up there is supposed to be a connector for a phone there. dunno anything else. the onstar works pretty good, as long as you dont have any noise when your speaking the number. i used it for two months. (it was free)
I believe onstar uses verizon?
Letsgo,
Around here I pay 13 cents per minute for anywhere, anytime w/AT&T and think that is a little high in todays market.
Chevymeister,
Thanks for the info on possible cell phone connector. I have also e-mail GMC customer servive for any information on a cell phone hook-up for hands free calling, will post any results.

I too got the On-Star and check on prices. IMHO pricey is the understatement of the year. I have 1000 minute plans for both my wife and I for less than 500 minutes of On-Star. I mounted a Nokia hands free kit in mine. I didn't like drilling the hole in the roof for the antenna, but with the rear defrost, it was that or the front windsheild which always whistles. I mounted the mic right next to the On-Star and made a plate to have the phone right in front of the cig lighter. I put the speaker under the consol pointing out at might feet. It works great. I wish I would have known about the plug in as that would have been nice to use. I got professional results so can't complain. :D
