View Full Version : Extended Warranty
Do any of you have a non GM extended warranty. If so, who is it with and are you happy with it?
Thanks,
Dave
Dave, Just a few weeks ago I got an extended warranty from Warranty Gold out of Texas.
For 5 years and 150,000 miles I don't worry about a thing (other than wear and tare stuff). Price was $1,918. They wanted $370 down and 12 equal payments, no interest.
I love this truck but I can see where it could be expensive to fix and I plan on keeping it for a long time and puting many miles on it.
Just my .02 centovos.
Mike
PS If you go this route, use my name and I'll get a few bucks back for referring.

I purchased a Warranty Gold warranty on a previous vehicle (1995 Pontiac Transport). We bought it while it was still under the factory warranty and we opted for the 7/100000 bumper-to-bumber plan. It was around $1100. Three claims were made on the plan before we hit the 7 year mark, and all three claims were paid nearly 100%, but WG managed to always come up with something that wasn't covered (figures). An equivilent GM warranty would have been nearly $3000, so I figured that I'd put up with their skimpy nature. In the end, we didn't quite recover our warranty purchase price (about a hundred bucks shy), but we could have easily not done so. One tranny failure and it would have more than covered itself.
My only gripe would be the effort required to obtain warranty coverage. The dealer/repair facility must call an 800 number and wait on hold FOREVER until a WG rep finally decides to answer the phone. (As you can imagine, your average dealer isn't going to be wild about this. One local dealer I went to even said that he wouldn't do business with me if I wanted him to work with Warranty Gold - it's a serious pain for them.) Then, the service rep is grilled about what's wrong with the vehicle. WG then authorizes an ammount to be paid. If you don't do this, you're not covered. Period. You absolutely cannot have repairs done and then bill WG. If you do so, they'll refuse to pay (it's in the language of the contract you have to sign when buying the coverage). Personally, I believe this is a way for them to get out of providing coverage. They have a TON of people on the phones ready to take your order for a new contract, but it seems that they only have a FEW people on the 800-number claims line. Bottom line: they pay out eventually and almost 100% (depending on the claim), but your service facility will wait for at least an hour on hold for them to do it. This is the sticking point.
As far as paying nearly $2k for a warranty on the DMAX, I think I'll roll the dice with mine. With the powertrain covered till 100k, I don't think I'd recoup the $2k purchace price. Besides, did WG only offer a 5/150 plan with the DMAX? That means you'd have to average 30k miles a year in order to use the lifespan of the coverage! This is a lot more than I drive, that's for sure.
It's a gamble either way.

I don't have an aftermarket warranty for the reasons explained by FrozenAKJoe, and more horror stories and experiences.
I did purchase the GM 100/5yr plan for less than 2 grand from my local dealer. I didn't even buy the truck from them. The plan does have a $100 ded, but covers bumper to bumper all but wear items. One time with the tranny out, or an A/C problem can easily break me even. I'd rather consider the money a loss and have a truck with no problems. Either way, the money's gone, and I'm not second guessing.
FrozenAKJoe:
Your "drivetrain" is not covered for 100K. Only the engine and selected components associated with emmission control. The computers, tranny, transfer case, rear/front end, and suspension components are not covered. I hope you weren't told that the OEM warranty would cover your "drivetrain" for 100K.
Pay now. Pay later. Chances are, we will.
Cheers
I'd read somewhere here that the flywheel (dual-mass, what ever that is) IS and IS NOT covered by the orginal GM 100k. Anyone know for sure?
