View Full Version : High Idle Switch...Or Variable Idle?
I'm gearing up for the high idle conversion. Then I asked myself "why?"
On my Blazer, I've installed a big rig wind-out knob style hand throttle so I can set the RPM at anywhere I like (good for the on-board welder). Why can't I do that to the diesel, and have any idle I care to have? (I have an '02 so the 800rpm setting isn't there anyway.)
Or is the programming going to get confused with the idle up high but the vehicle isn't moving for a duration of time?

ryeguy,
I've never seen the big rig wind-out knob you describe, but my guess is that it won't work very well on the Dmax drive by wire throttle...
got one on my welder on my jeep.....saw them first on a wrecker.....wont work on fly by wire.........dave
Well...I was thinking about rigging it up to the throttle pedal...

Go with the high idlw - it seems like it will be a lot easier.
Perhaps JK can fill us in on variable high idle. I saw it referred to on this forum and and a reference in the shop manual.

The option is available from GM directly for chassis cabs only!!!! The parts are over the counter and the switch fits to the right of the Heater controls in the area where the air bag shutoff switch would be.
I saw a post somewhere about it. The regular trucks are not wired for the harness and to my knowledge it is not an upfitable part.
If anybody knows something different let us know
Thanks.

You an wire the high idle per the posts here. Takes about 1.5 hours (depends on your expertise). The shop manual shows that the default is 1300/1800 rpm, with a variable from 800 in 100 rpm increments. The question is if the ECM can be programmed for the option.
High idle reset with Tech 2:
I have reset the idle speeds with good success, BUT, the standby speed (lost on '02s anyhow) gets a funky, slurry idle that switches continually between balancing and not balancing injector rates. This is no big deal, but something that should be understood prior to doing this.
I set mine to 900. and 1100 IIRC. Anything over 100 IMHO sounds too "busy"
There are also some things to watch in the setup menu that do not come to mind at the moment, but make sure the max RPM is lowered from the 5757 setting it is defaulted to. I missed this once, and the ECM only took half of the programming. I cut it off before it got too high, but it was heading across the red line with no indication of letting up
I've had the variable thing working, but really hit/miss, and have not gone back to try again.
Thanks John. I think I'll leave mine alone. If you can't sort it out, I'm not sure who can.
