Ok audiophiles, lets see some pics and and box specs. I want to build a box for a couple 10's. There have been some that removed interior parts to make it work, but I would prefer not to. Any and all help is, as always, appreciated...

AKDmax,

I think your going to have a hard time fitting 10"ers behind the rear seat without having to remove the carpeted flap or modify the rear trim panel.

I, too, did not want to remove or modify parts of my truck, so I fabricated a couple of boxes that fit 8"ers that utilize almost every square inch of space back there. IMHO, quality 8"ers (with adaquate power) can provide all the bass you'll need and then some.

Linked to my sig, I have a CAD drawing of the enclosure, so if you do decide to go the 8"er route, feel free to save some of the hassle and build it to the specs given.

If intereseted, I could also get some actual pics up some time this week.

Good luck!

I removed the carpeted flap, only 3 or 4 screws held it in. I built a very strong enclosure housing two 10" subs. It fills up the rear area but is invisible with the seats in the normal position. It rocks the rock! (To quote NutnButGMC)

Click on truck pics to check it out. The only thing I would do different would be to use MDF rather than particle board for the material.

woundedbear,
I am interested in your box. I tried the link to your pics but it doesn't work for me. I have seen boxes that have the amp in the center of the box mounted in a recess. They looked pretty trick.
SoCal,
Nice looking box, just not interested in triming anything, I may have to go with 8's. Thanks for the help.
Anyone else out there? The more ideas the better. Maybe we can come up with the ultimate box for a CC.

AKD......GO with the 10". It will fit. Put a killer system in it. Mine rocks the roads. 10" sub, 600w amp, door speakers with tweeters. etc... Do it right... I have seen systems with more, but this will suffice for a berry berry wong time. I have pics I'll e-mail you, if you please?

Hi AKDmax:

I have 2 10's in a custom box w/amp in between...see pics in "truck toys" album. As NutnBut says, you can't go wrong with the 10's...you'll love 'em!

OK, me three! I highly recommend 10" subs. The enclosure doesn't have to be that tall. If shortened by 1/2", no trimming is required.

If you're interested, I can email you dimensions for an enclosure that will hold 10" subs and require only the removal of the flaps, no other mods.

AKDmax,

In order to link to my pics, you need to click on the hyperlink in my sig that says:

"2002 Chevrolet Silverado K2500HD Crew Cab 153"WB LS Duramax/Allison"

As for you 10" fans, are you saying 8" isn't enough to satisfy?

Wounded, something is still wrong with your link. It is going to a generic picture trail page, not your page.

woundedbear,

I wouldn't know personally, but that's what she said. ;)

OK, seriously, the frequencies I'm trying to get are 20-200hz. The 6.5" woofers in the door can't even come close, so I use them for mids(200hz to 3Khz) and it works great. 8" IMHO isn't much bigger than 6.5". 10" is the minimum I've ever used to push the amount of air at the low frequencies that I want.

Good quality 12" subs gives effortless subsonic bass that can really be felt. If I'm going to all of the trouble to build an enclosure for the truck, I might as well squeeze in the best I can get.

Disclaimer: This is JMHO for my own system. At the levels that I like to listen, I have the windows up on the open road. Even with the windows up, others can be bothered at intersections by my volume levels, so I turn it down some at stoplights.

After doing some rough measurements, I think 10's will fit without mods to the flaps. You could slam four 8's in there and still have room for an amp on the box.
Woundedbear, your link is a generic link to picturetrail. you need to add you user name for picturetrail to the end of you URL. Like this: My Pics (http://www.picturetrail.com/AKDmax)
NutNbutGMC, I am interested in what you have for pics and box design. Tell me about the "rock the rock" speaker setup. My e-mail is at the bottom. Thanks
DMAXDiva, That's what I'm looking for. Are your flaps removed to install the box?
SoCal, Nice install on the box. Can't tell there is any trimming done at all. I am interested in a box design. I really didn't look at how much space can be gained by removing the flaps. Seemed like there were some vents and stuff under them when I looked last.
Thanks to all that replied. I am still gathering ideas, the more the merrier.

AKDmax,

The flaps sit on metal tabs that are welded to the rear wall. Removing the flaps gives you an extra 1/2" or 3/4" of height and allows you to access the jack and handle under the sub enclosure without disassembling everything. They only take a minute to remove, never missed them.

AKDmax,
If you do this I may be forced to pull my 8" bass tube out and put in 2 10's. You heard my 8. What would it sound like with 2 10's in a reg cab?

Ok, Got some ideas I'm gonna try and run with. Thanks everyone... Have you seen the kicker Solo-Baric square subs? They only require a 9-1/4" square hole, and a 5-11/16" depth. Minimum volume is .66, with a max volume of 1 (that

OK,

Here are the outside dimensions of my dual 10" sub enclosure.

48" wide, 11-3/4" high, 6" deep at the top, 7-1/4" deep at the bottom.

This requires that the carpeted flaps at the bottom be removed and 1/2" be trimmed from the plastic below the rear window. If you don't want to trim the plastic, change height to 11-1/4". This gives a snug seal at the top of the enclosure to the rear of the seat with a small gap at the bottom, which forces the air to go down and under the rear seat before it enters the main part of the cab. I'm theorizing it deepens the bass a bit, trying to copy Dr. Bose a little. ;)

Ensure the finished interior is large enough (depth and height) to accomodate your brand of sub(subtract thickness of enclosure material from dimensions.) I'd recommend 1/2" MDF with 4 - 1"x1" stiffeners equally spaced between the 2 subs to stiffen the front to the rear.

I used a 4 way 4 post speaker terminal in the bottom for the wires.

Thanks for the hints on box building SoCal.

Diva, I didn't get anything...

The October issue of Truckin has an Audio/Video section in it. Shows a box install in a 3500 under the seat, as well as door speaker upgrades. Some pretty cool video stuff too.

Sorry about that...I've been having e-mail problems lately.

Dimensions: 1/2 inch plywood box

55 inches across
14 inches tall
5 inches deep at top, graduating to 7 inches deep at base.

Hope that helps!

Good luck to you...

^...AKD, I sent you pics, specs and a drawing a few days back. Hope you got 'em. Remember, you'll need cubic air space (in the box) for the sub to do its thAng, so don't skrimp with space saving methods. Mine calculated out to the recommended 0.97 cu. ft. That is what each sub needs for optimum performance. Remove the dang flap and get over it :D You'll never know its gone nor miss it, after you crank on the volume.

Diva and NutN,
I received both E-mails. Thank you! I think I will get over removing the flaps and do it. Looked at pair of 12's yesterday that require just over a 10" hole and less than 1 cube of volume. 10's should do the trick though. Maybe by next week the box will be built.

i had a stereo shop build a custom ported box that holds one Kicker 8L7. The box runs the whole width of the truck.

I did not believe them when they told me it would sound good - "_one _ 8L7?" he said trust me

I've had a bunch of car stereos, nothing i've had hits harder than this box. The L7's when in a professionally built box, ported correctly, & fed enough power are truly astounding.

Just another idea, pretty sure the link in my sig works and shows a picture of it.

Hey ZR1:

Nice to see someone else running MB Quarts...how ya like 'em? I "ear tested" several different brands, but these Q's beat 'em all hands down...awesome speakers!

the Q218's are amazing. had to set the tweeter on -30db (not super sure on that #). they take a ton of power without a shred of distortion, but you know that already ;)

man those krauts like 'em bright!!

While on the subject.... Is the rear seat posts a good enough point for grounding your amps?? It looks to be the BEST place without additional drilling.
