View Full Version : Keyless Entry Problem

Having a problem with the keyless entry. Does anyone know where the module is located? I don't think it's the remote battery because the problem happens, neither of the remotes work no matter how close I am to the truck. When it is working, both remotes will work across the parking lot. One remote wasn't used until I had the problem.

Sometimes those remotes require reprograming. It is real easy, your manual should tell you how to reprogram them,I remember you have to stand close to the truck and push two of the buttons at the same time but I don't remember which ones, but I know the manual will tell you how to do it. Hope this helps.

Sometimes those remotes require reprograming.I know how to reprogram them, but curious as to why they work sometimes and other times do not. When they work, they work...when the system decides to sleep, neither of them works. Would the revolving code cause this? Anybody?

because the problem happens, neither of the remotes work no matter how close I am to the truck. When it is working, both remotes will work across the parking lot I don't know if this will fit your situation, but I am in the Navy and when I am close to ships that are transmitting RADAR and high power communications equipment I encounter the same problems. When I am near landing helicopters their radio gear kills my keyless entry (I know this sounds far-fetched but I have stood there until the fly away and the fobs will work again). I also sometimes park next to power substations with the same result. These things are really sensitive to EMI/IMI - are you parking close to a large electrical load or near some sort of transmitter when this happens?

I have to agree with 2K2AD. I work in the two-way radio field and there have been times where I can operate the locks from across the parking lot and other times I must hold the key next to the window. The keyless entry system has a very low power radio transmitter built into the key FOB and the receiver is in the vehicle. If you are in an area that has a very high radio frequency field that happens to be in the right frequency range, the keyless entry receiver can be overloaded. The effect of that is very short range, i.e., you need to be right next to the truck window with the key FOB. You do not need to be parked next to radio transmitting tower for this to happen. There is one location that I always have trouble and I am parked about 2 miles from where the radio and TV transmitters are located. I have been parked on a hilltop that had many radio transmitters and it worked just fine. Not all radio transmitters will cause the problem; there are many variables involved in causing the interference.

The bad news is keyless entry systems operate under FCC part 15 and as such, are not allowed to interfere with other licensed radio services and must accept inference from other licensed services. The good news is most of the time they work correctly.

On the other hand, if you have the problem when you are out in the boonies and you cannot see any radio towers you might have an equipment problem.

battmain,
Check out the July 03 GM Tech Link (http://service.gm.com/gmtechlink/images/issues/jul03/TLjul03e.html#story3). It describes a problem similar to yours. smile.gif

Here's one for you to try sometime.

Hold the remote next to your cheek while pressing the button. Increases the range considerably. Apparently the ole noggin is a pretty good antenna for 432 Mhz.

Hey George, I believe you are onto something there.

Coincidentally, shortly after reading this some friends dropped by and he needed to open the trunk of their car for his wife from a fair distance. Wouldn't go. I told him to try your trick and it worked!

No, no electrical interferance anywhere. I think the problem is with the connectors to the module. It worked when I parked the truck this morning and I went back to get my license and the POS didn't work then. I happened to have the spare key fob handy and it didn't work either. To top it off, I'll need a new mirror switch and headlight switch. Both of them are working intermittently.

battmain,

If you don't have a "Scan" tool, visit a friend that has one or visit your local AutoZone Store and check for any fault codes set in the computer. If there are any codes beginning with a "U" it means there was a communications problem between modules. You would not believe how complex this system is. There is a module in each door that communicates over the bus to the body control module. It looks like the receive antenna in on the Passenger side door module? The body control module is located to the right of the steering wheel behind the knee bolster. It has three multi pin connectors going into it.

If no codes are set, then you might have an intermittent connection problem. Have to remove both door panels and unplug/plug connectors going to the door modules. Unplug/plug connectors on the body control module. Anything else acting flaky like mirrors? Same modules.

Good luck.

HDLD,

After I got a gold crown on one of my back teeth, I swear my range increased to around 100 yards. :D :D

One of my key fobs doesn't work. My manual mentions "resynchronizing" the fob, but doesn't tell me how to do it. Does anybody know?

Tsckey:

To resync, just take the fob that needs to be resynced out to the truck. Stand beside the truck and press the lock and unlock buttons at the same time. Hold both buttons down. The truck should respond in 7 to 10 seconds by first locking and then unlocking all doors. When the lock/unlock sequence has been completed, release the buttons. You are now resynced....

Sometimes a truck will not respond to a resync attempt. If that happens, I have solved that by 'cycling' the systems through a start engine/drive around the block/stop engine. I think that 'cycling' causes the ECM/BCM to perform a memory clean-up.

No codes set according to autotap. :( I still think it's the connectors to the module. I want to pull them apart and reconnect them. I'm going to do that with the mirror switch and headlight switch and add some dielectric grease to the contacts.

JMPDMAX,

Thanks, it worked. I'd tried that before, but I guess I didn't hold the buttons long enough. For some reason, my manual, very early '03, mentions resynching, but doesn't say how to do it--or if it does, I couldn't find it. :(
