View Full Version : Dumb Question on spare wheel

Today I change engine oil, filter, allison transmission filter, and rear differential lube.

All went well except removing the spare tire. I was able to drop it down just fine and this gave me plenty of room underneath, but I thought I would take the tire all the way out and check air pressure, etc.
HOWEVER, I COULD NOT GET IT OFF THE MECHANISM THE CABLE IS ATTACHED TO.

The book simply says slide the support bracket through the rim, but I couldn't. There is probably a simple explanation, and I hope I have provided a good belly laugh for everyone, but I would rather know now than in the middle of no where in a rainstorm.

Help anyone?

Thanks, Don

You will need some slack of cable from the tires. As you pull out the cable with support bracket on its end, tilt the bracket in 90 degrees angle and it should be able to slide right through the rim and out.

I had to beat mine off with the lug wrench last week. It's the first time that the spare had to be used and it was stuck on there pretty good because of some mud & rust. Just lower the tire all the way to the ground, lift up on the tire a little bit and give that thing a couple good whacks. You will have to have some slack in the cable in order to get that metal device wedged out of the center hole. Have fun! ;)

Thanks for the replies.

I think I did not get enough slack in the cable to rotate the mechanism enough to fit one leg at a time through the wheel hole. Lesson learned. I also learned that when returning the tire to the secure position, it needs to latch so it won't be suspended by the cable only.
