I have a 2005 siverado HD diesel with 6sp.

I was wondering if anyone has tried this adaptor to hook a ipod through the radio? It is the basic AM/FM radio with CD model that you get with the stick.

I bought this FM transmitter at Wal-Mart to use my MP3 player in the truck ... works well.

Devices that use an FM transmitter will give less fidelity than a direct connect. If you have the Bose stereo it will be more noticable. I installed a device that is about a third the price of the ipod2car adapter. It enables an auxilliary input to the factory sound system so that you can direct connect your ipod right to it. You just hit the band button until it the display says AUX IN and you're in business. It won't let you change songs on your ipod with the steering wheel buttons, but you can connect any audio device to it. I use it with a satelite radio receiver and my Rio. This is one place where you can find the adapter you'd need. They cost about $70 and might be found for less elsewhere. http://www.xmfanstore.com/showproduct.php?id=pieoem
Mine needed the GM12v2-AUX and it works great.

Mine needed the GM12v2-AUX and it works great. I use a similar PIE device in my truck. Works well, although I get some ground-loop hum when I also have the iPod plugged into truck power.

Andy, Mark,

Thanks for the tip on the PIE adapter. http://forum.thedieselpage.com/ubb/icons/icon14.gif. Price has come down on these units... No question that the a direct connect to the OEM head unit will provide better quality sound than the FM transmitter.

Thanks, I hadn't seen the PIE adpator for $70.

The question though now is my head unit okay? In the application chart for the PIE it states, "Must have XM-Satellite/CD changer ready head unit".

Is there anyway at looking at the options code in the glove compartment that tells me what the head unit is?

I got my stereo guy to hook up an adapter to the back of my stereo (I have the XM cd player that came with the truck)so that I have a wire that connects directly to my Ipod that just hangs down from the back of the dash and is long enough so i can click it to the next song if I need to.. I think it was about $120.00 which is better than the ones they try to sell you at best buy because they cost hundreds of dollars plus install. They are better becuase they have the display and controls ,,but I dont need those. I just plug mine in and play --I have to push two buttons on the xm radio controls on the the head unit and then it plays. i think it sounds better than the fm modlators units. Only problem is that it does not charge the battery so i always charge it before we go to mexico(san felipe) I can listen the whole way down with no recharge also the xm radio works done there which kind of surprised me so I subscribed for one year.
