I have purchased a set of Weld forged 20x8.5 wheels for my 05 Chevy 2500HD. I'm looking for anyones experience with tire size's. I really like the goodyear AT-S 275/65/20, which is a 10ply with a 3750lb wieght rating. Its height is 34.1" and width is 11.0" This is the tire that Ford puts on the F-250 with the 20" wheel option.
Before you tell me that it won't fit.. I have raised the front bumper 2.5" and pushed it forward 1/2". I removed the stock (tall) black bumper top and put on a painted bumper top from a 06 1/2 ton.

UPDATE: I had to do a bumper lift on an 04 GMC 2500HD this weekend. The owner installed 285/55/20 BFG all terrains. They are 32.5" tall and 12" wide. He installed them on American Racing "Legends" 20x8.5 The tires were to big, we had to remove the front bumper before it could leave the tire shop.
The GMC turned out to be a harder mod than my chevy. All the new brackets and bolts were the same, but that was it. We had to cut the black filler piece off the grill. (slow and tedious work)The factory bumper brackets had to be notched in 2 different places. The biggest problem is the lower valance. On the GMC it curves in toward the frame and is 1.5" closer to the frame than the Chevy. So even with tne bumper lift it is still close with these tires on the GMC. The lower valance has NOT been cut or modified it still appears as stock.
This bumper mod is very similar to what Gale Banks does to his SIDEWINDER Chevys.
I'm still looking for info and experiences with 20's on anyones HD. My goal for the 34's doesn't look so good without a suspension lift, allthough there is more room on the Chevy HD.

Do not know about an 04 chevy but my 83 took some 20's nicely. Went 285/50R20. Fit so well that I am considering a 2" lowering to the truck and still not require any cutting. 65R20 would have also fit.

Craig I appreciate your responce. If the new trucks had the same fender clearances then I'd have no problem. I had 35/12.50/16.5 BFG's on my 87 Suburban without any rub issues. My biggest problem is weight rated tires. I'm limited to only 2 the BFG 285/55/20, 32.5" tall, Load range D, $300.00... or the Goodyear 275/65/20, 34.1" tall, Load range E, $210.00. My wheels are only 8'5" wide so the 305's are not recommended. If anyone knows of any other all terrain tires that fit this size (285/55/20-275/65/20) and weight class (D or E) please let me know.

You are right. Hard to get load rated tires in 20's. They are mostly for cars and show trucks, not tow vehicles. The great size for capacity are the 19.5's. They are rated for 18 wheel trucks and are a real load rated tire. Problems are wheels. They are expensive if you want aluminum. Only a couple of guys make the 8 bolt pattern for the 19.5's. Adaptors to go to the "normal" 10 bolt wheels are available, but they are also very expensive. There are a set of Bentz aluminum wheels and 19.5 tires on ebay as we speak for $2700.00.
