View Full Version : Nerf Bars...would you get 'em again?
Well I've never had Nerf bars on my trucks, but I do like the way they look. I'm thinking about some Westin Chrome over stainless for my '03 2500HD CC (cab length), but they seem like they would get in the way when getting in and out of the truck, unless you always step first on the Nerf bar. For those of you with bars, would you get them again?

They are best for anybody a little shorter than average getting in the truck (Ladies). Yes, I guess they do look good as well. I personally dont use them except when cleaning the cab of the truck. I would get them again though....
Absolutely. I'm ~5'11", and I use them getting in . They make it easier. I don't always use them sliding out, but my wife at 4'11" needs them either way. In fact, when I test drove the truck, she had to step up on a 5 gallon bucket they had in the dealer's lot. I had them installed (along with the bedliner) before I drove the truck off the lot.
I had them on my 99 and they were one of the first things I installed on the 03. Over time they will really save the outside edge of the drivers seat. The seat gets alot of wear there as the driver is constantly sliding across that edge to step out of the truck. Check my pics for the Rhino nerf step.

I did get them again - had two sets on my 97 - the first were LuVerne - broke in half after four years  Although they were not stainless, just chromed steel. Company wouldn't stand behind them - I couldn't stand on them.
Followed those with a set of ICI stainless. Very nice and solid, custom mounting for the truck. Never a problem. No question - ICI's went right onto the '02 when I picked it up. They have good rubber traction step pads by all four doors, end caps to seal the ends of the tubes, and a center support on the longer ones. I use them to get in and out of the truck. I'd get them again.

I put the Crew Cab length Westin Chromes on my 03.
Best Nerf's I've ever owned! Easy to mount very sturdy and nice looking. I'm 5-10 and use them to get in but not out. My wife and kids need them both in and out.
Very good investment! ;)
Bars and a bed liner have always been my first upgrades. Check out the 4" Putco's, they are sized right for these big cabs.

Hi roegs:
I've got a set of Westin cab-length chromies that I'd sure like to sell..went with black w2w's, and actually need to sell that set too now, 'cuz I had to get a new set of w2w's with steps underneath (my truck's too tall for me now, and I'm 5'11! ). Let me know if you're interested; don't know what shipping from Texas to Mn might run, but they'd certainly be cheaper than retail! ;)

Thanks for all the replies to this. I had one last question...do the bottom kick panels on the truck (just below the doors) get banged up from shoes/boots kicking them as they step on/off the nerf bars?
DMAXDiva...I might be interested in your bars. Do you know if they are Signature or Platinum? Here in Minnesota, they use a lot of salt on the roads, and for me, having the chrome plated stainless bars (Platinum) is a must.

I've got the GM ones on my '03 Crew Cab. I usually use them getting in, but not getting out. But the bad thing about not using them getting out is I get the back of my pants leg dirty, especially lately w/ all of the salt on the roads.
I don't believe I ever put my foot in far enough to kick the kick panels.

I've got the stainless Westin's, nice product. I did however get tired of the pinging when driving on dirt and gravel roads with them. So I picked up a couple of cans of insulating "insta-foam" and foam filled mine! Cuts down on the ping and I would highly recommend it with either the stainless or steel versions.
Never had a problem kicking the kick panels!

I got the Platinum Westin Chrome on stainless and living here by the Great Salt Lake, we use a lot of Salt to keep the roads clear (As you can imagine). No problems so far this winter, they look great!
As far as the kick concerns, NONE! Plastic pads look great and have great traction! They don't scuff and don't come off like my last set of Lucerns did. If you want a picture you can get the link by going to accesories forum and look my current thread "Birthday gift for midlife crisis" At the end of thread, I posted a link to a picture that should show you my 03 with the Westins.
MaDuraMax,
Theres a solution to stop that "Pinging of the nerf bar" called Mud flaps! LOL.... Actually, I really like your foam suggestion!!!! You'd want to make sure their dry inside before doing this!

FisHn2DMax ...nice truck! You're right, the bars do look nice. I'm also looking for a bug deflector..which one do you have on yours?

Roegs,
Thanks! The Bug Shield is a Magnum by Deflecta Shield. It was easy to install (no drilling, 5 minute install) and it looks great! I believe I paid in the $50-60 range for it.
Good Luck!

I had a set of Westin CPS on my '99 Silverado extended cab (Installed Feb (01). Traded the truck last month. The tubes themselves held up well, but the step pad on the drivers side had one end of the pad coming up (ie. not attached). Still worked and looked fine. Bought a new '03 CC dmax last month and went back to the dealer that I bought the Westins from, and they had stopped selling the Westins because of the chrome plating coming off. I realize that they have a lifetime warranty, but the dealer was seeing several coming back for warranty problems. Personally I did not have a problem with this. The dealer suggested I try the Tech Tubes http://www.ttltx.com because they were high grade polished stainless (no rust or peeling chrome). They do not stick out as far as the Westins, and the tubes I got were for the '01 / '02 Silverado CCs. My only complaint was that I had to drill a new monuting hole on the drivers side for the rear stabilizing bar (parking brake cable in the way). These tubes look excellent and are very strong. Only 2 mounting brackets vs. 3 for the Westins on the CC model. Didn't check the price on the Westin CPS, but I think they are about the same price.

Mike,
Is it possible your dealer was pushing you away from Westin for reasons other than the "so-called returns"? The reason I ask is I have a friend here in town that owns a busy four wheel drive accessory shop and he sells a lot of the Westin CPS, and claims he has never had a return due to chrome peeling on the Westin. He sells many other brands ( Including the Tech tube) that offer better profit margin, but he still believes the Westin CPS are the best for the Money! He admitted has seen the one pad come loose on the CPS, but this is minor compared to the many problems he's seen with other popular makes. Some dealers make better margins with other makes, so they push/steer customers to what gives them the best profit.
So it's very possible the Tech Tubes are a good product, and I confirmed with him that they do give the him a better competitive profit margin over the Westin CPS? Again, all brands have a problem every now and then, but Westin has been around along time and has a great overall history.
Good Luck with the Tech Tubes, My dealer friend said they're a good product and I'm sure they'll work out just fine! I did see a tech tube and it's nice looking!
;)

The reason I like them better than running boards is that the mud doesn't pile up on them behind the front tire.. tongue.gif
