What is involved in setting the timing on the injection pump. Some of you thought I might need to check that to see if it was causing my hard start problem. Can the dealer shop do it right? Is a scanner needed?

PHID,
YOU'LL NEED A BI-DIRECTIONAL SCANNER SUCH AS A TECH 1 OR 2! IT HAS TO BE ABLE TO DO A TDC OFFSET LEARN. SURELY SOME OF THESE GOOD OLE BOYS ON TDP IN YOUR AREA WOULD BE ABLE TO HELP YOU OUT! A DEALER CAN CHECK IT FOR YOU ALSO,MAKE SURE YOU HAVE IT SET TO AT LEAST -1.50! MOST GUYS TRY TO GET -1.94 THESE ENGINES SEEM TO RUN GOOD AT THAT SETTING!!!!

I once asked a dealer about this and he had no clue what I was talking about. Is this a hard thing (time consuming) for a dealer to do?

My dealer charged me $109...and I still had to buy my own coffee. Got to watch CNN for free while I waited.

Next time take a trip to the Island. Takes 5 minutes.

Cost you fuel & tolls.

Ohhh...5 minutes in the shop.

Just funnin' with 'ya.

Mighty nice offer. Thanks much. Would love to get up there sometime and compare notes. Remember that post of yours a while back regarding your truck's torque reading thru the Tech II? Last night I had the opportunity to play with EASE Diagnostics scanning software. At WOT, I saw 487 lb.-ft.! It certainly wasn't the 396 lb.-ft. that the DynoJet run gave me. But hey, I won't tell if you don't.

Regarding the techII torque reading I saw in the GM service manual a couple of days ago that it is calculated based on various engine parameters but is supposed to be accurate within 15 ft-lbs.

What are the positives and negatives of setting the timing to "-1.94"? How much of a difference does it really make? What about increased heat? Thanks!

I HAD ALREADY INTERCOOLED MY TRUCK WHEN I RESET MY TIMING SO I NEVER NOTICED ANY INCREASED HEAT,BUT THE POWER INCREASE WAS DEFINITELY NOTICABLE,COLD STARTS GOT BETTER TOO!!!

Phid,
What truck you got OBDII 96+ years can also be set with a Snap On scanner most general automotive shops have those.
