I am getting ready for the sand season. Looking for a GPS for my truck, thinking about a hand held unit that I can take to the sand too. Looking at Garmin etrex. What do you all think about this & other gps?

I have a Garmin Etrex Legend and I love it.
It works well, though sometimes I think not having an antenna hurts its reception compared to those with antennas. But its still a nice box.
I also bought MS Streets and Trips 2004 and hooked it to an OLD laptop, real time 15 inch screen while driving. Wife doesnt let me play with it while driving, but she sure does! Hmm, maybe I ought to reword that!
Purchased it here GPS NOW GPS Stuff (http://www.gpsnow.com/)
Someone else had a link that had some different brands. Try a SEARCH on GPS and you might be able to find it.

I have the Garmin etrex, been using it for a few years now. I have it mounted on my quad and wired to 12v. Works great for off roading, where street maps and other complicated programs are useless when out in the dunes. I like the fact that it is portable, If your vehicle gets stuck or broken down, you mark the spot on the gps, go back to camp to get what ever you need, and be able to find exactly where you left your truck.
I do believe the antenna is an issue when it doesn't have a clean shot of the sky. I did use it in my truck to check the speedo and it worked fine.
I also have the Garmin Etrex Legend and think it's a very good unit for the cost. I like the ability to take it anywhere as opposed to something hardwired to my truck.

I have an Etrex that I use when traveling. If you get an Etrex, you can build your own cable with parts from www.pfranc.com (http://www.pfranc.com) Suggest you build a power cable at least. Batteries don't last very long on my unit. Probably about 2.5 hours of continuous use.

For "consumer grade" units the Garmin 76s is probably the best for the money.
For high-end ($4,500+) the Trimble units with Windows CE...

Magellan Meridian Platinum is compariable to Garmins 76s, but the added benifit is the additional memory chips that can be loaded into the MeriPlat in the form of SD chips up to 256Mb.Several State sized areas of ToPo information can be loaded and used.
The MeriPlat gets my vote.
I run a garmin 176c full color gps display with topo & mapsource on memory chip. Works great. no computer needed to to find lok up address. Started with Emap for entry level rolling maps. Can use topo with it.
I'll go with the 76s being right at the top. The ETrex is nice and small, did I say small screen? The 76s floats, that probably means the dirt (sand) will have a hard time finding it's way into the unit. Ask for a demmo, evne the ones you don't want, and compare.

i have the garman 76 and love it, use it all the time on the farm, highley recomened
