I have seen it several times tonight that you can't post a link to a page or apicture on this site.  How can this be true since several people post links and some even post pic of there trucks.

Can someone set me straight on this? Oh, please tell me how to post links and pics. :D :D

dmaxmule,

Click on faq (http://forum.thedieselpage.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=faq) in the upper right corner, then page down and read about How do I use HTML and UBB Code? http://forum.thedieselpage.com/ubb/icons/icon6.gif

This is how I produced the links above (spaces added to permit showing the UBB code)

Click on [ URL= http: //forum.thedieselpage.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=faq]faq in the upper right corner, then page down and read about [ b]How do I use HTML and UBB Code? [ IMG]http://forum.thedieselpage.com/ubb/icons/icon6.gif

Also........

You cannot host (post) images or files from your own computer. In most cases, images are not imbedded (not actually in the page) into TDP pages, they are just shown inline. They have to be hosted on a site that is accessible on the internet, and linked with a URL. Some of these sites include Webshots, Picturetrail, Yahoo, etc, or your own web page. If you need to, find a hosting site, like the ones I listed, and start an account. You can upload your pic's to your album on their site, then link the pic's to a posting here. Some are free, some are not.

I use Webshots.com (http://www.webshots.com), which is a free site. You are more limited on how much bandwidth you are allowed (compared to the "pay" sites), but they are pretty generous. You can pay for an upgraded account to expand the capabilities. Most "free" sites run that way.

sounds like it is time for another server/storage upgrade. lots of other forums have this capability, why not here ? limit the picture size, disk storage is cheap............

Ski,

Disk storage is not the problem. We have 60G of disk space on our dedicated high-speed BB forum server. Bandwidth is another issue, but we have plenty right now. Cheap? No, it isn't - not if you want reliability, not if you want performance, not if you want personalized 24/7/365 support.

Hosting images greatly exposes a server to DOS attacks. A DOS attack is a "Denial Of Service" attack, where some miscreant tries to shut down a server (or "deny" access to all others) with an extraordinary amount of traffic. MS and Ebay suffered this problem not long ago as a result of an Internet worm that infected an untold number of PC's. Public file upload capability creates an inviting DOS target.

I've posted in this BB before that any current member can send me an image that will be uploaded to the TDP server, and then would be accessible here in this BB. We're here to help people.

In so far as defining cheap, I could state a few of my own opinions.

MP,

thanks for the response. I was comparing capabilities of different forums with respect to image posting. I am well aware of DOS attacks and others, work daily with these in my line of work. As far as cost goes, cheap was referring to cost versus membership dues. just thought it could be easier to share visually with other members.
