I am a man that likes to have several keys for my vehicles, and I was wondering how expensive the keys are to get duplicates. Has anyone gotten thier dealer to throw in extra key in the deal or even get keys for you at there cost? What is the best possible price for keys?

When I bought my truck I had a third key cut so I would have a spare to carry in case I locked myself out. I don't think it cost me $10 if even that much. It's possible that the dealer even threw it in as part of the deal. :D :D :D

There's nothing special about D-max keys. When I had (temorarily, as it turned out) lost the key and remote it cost me $22 for a remote and $1.79 for a key. I bought the key at a lock shop because the dealer was out of stock, they'd have given it to me (free) if they'd had one.

Someone told me the keys had chips in them, and that they were expensive. I guess they were wrong. I am glad you guys are here to straighten things out.
Thanks dmaxmule

Hmmmm, I was told the '04's have something special in them as well. Maybe the '01/'02's are different?

Just grabbed mine. There IS something embedded in the key. You can clearly see it.

My Driver #2 key has a little divot ground into the side as well. Is this how it recognizes me as Driver #1 or #2?

I see nothing in my key - January '04 build date.

The "driver 1", "driver 2", is triggered by the remote lock release. If you lock the door with the remote for driver 1, and then unlock using the key for driver 2, the truck will show "driver 1".

Mark,

Thanks for the info on the DRIVER 1/2.

However, my keys DEFINATELY have SOMETHING inbedded in the key. It starts about 1/16" from the black plastic cover, and is a round deformation about the diameter of a pencil eraser. It also has a smaller circle inside that. This is only visible on one side of the key. Turn it over and its NOT there.

On the other (not there side) there is a small divot at the end of the center groove. Just about opposite of the mark on the other side. It looks like someone took a 1/4" drill bit and started a hole and didn't finish. It's less than 1/16" across, and is barely noticable. But that is only on my #2 Key. Its not there on the #1 Key.

I could post a picture, but....Oh yeah, this is TDP, and you cant

Anyway, there IS something imbedded in MY keys. What it is I don't know?

I am looking at my key and see no holes or any other feature that would indicate anything special. It's nothing more than a regular key.

In the manual it says nothing about having to go to GM for a replacement key. On the LeSabre it has special keys and states this in the manual.

I prefer the plain keys so I can carry one in my wallet and mount a couple under the vehicle with tie wraps.
