I would like to get a larger and slightly more aggressive set of tires mounted, when I receive my new super-truck.
I have tentatively decided on the BFG All-terrain T/A. load range D's
1. Comments? Others you would recommend?
2. Anyone know what max size I can go to without any lock-lock interference or suspension problems. I will retain the stock suspension.
As always, my compliments on a great dedicated group, clearly the best board/ club around.
Best regards,
ABurn-burning to my my new super truck.

acidburn,
The biggest they will reprogram for is 265/16.
Watch the load if you drop to a D load range, it's amazing how you can load these boys down and not even feel it!
Good luck with the new rig.

The max size without any mods would be a 265, I have 295's on mine, had to crank up the torsions and zip tie the plastic fenders back, also had to trim the plastic air dam on the sides, have no tire contact lock to lock. My neighbor put 285's on his and he had to do the same. As for the tires go BFG's!! I have a set of the all terrains (see pics below) and love them. Had a previous set of the mud terrains on my lifted chevy and hated them, they wore out fast and I was not too impressed the way they handled off road ether, that's why I went with the all terrains. They are sweeeeet! http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hey thanks guys.
So the only size we did not mention was the 275's
Mr. Deisel Power,
from your experience do you think those (275's) would fit with no mods.
I could get the dealer to reprogram for 265's and only be off a little on the speedo?
Is that the only thing that the reprogram affects?
Thanks in advnce for the help.

I think 275's would fit without any mod's but the 275 is kind of an odd size, (like the 295 too) alot of tire manifacturers have gotten away from this size for some reason and you might have a hard time finding a tire in that size you like. As for hauling you should be alright with the load range d's as long as you don't haul any large buildings or semi trailers. http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Also if you are going to buy a second set of rims (winter/summer) you might want to leave the calibration alone so when you put the stockers back on the truck reads correct. I did'nt recalibrate the speedo because you don't actually put as many miles on the odometer as you are the truck itself. I.E. - more warranty, less miles!! http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif I just live with it. Some people think that the larger tires screw the shift pattern up on the tranny because the truck is moving faster than the computer thinks it is, this I don't know about, I pull a 12k fifth wheel trailer and don't notice anything out of the ordinary......Hope this helps.

Yep, thanks it helps allot.
The tire you have and like, the one i like and you suggested, is actually offered in 275/70. I dont think that acomplishes anytihng, so as you say, its the 265's or up to the 285, which wont run w/o fender problems if understnad what you are saying?
bummer, 265 it will be. http://www.plauder-smilies.com/rough/itschy.gif

acidburn, look at the 255-85x16. They are an odd size but offer an interesting option. The 255 is a little wider (approximately .5") than the factory 245 tire and still can mount on the factory rim. The 255 is around the same height (33") as the 285, but being narrower, would not rub as much or have as large of a rolling resistance as the 285-75x16. Dunlop, Cooper, Firestone and others make tires in this size. Hope this helps. MaxRock

My 2001 D/A is a old 04/01 model, in those by gone days 265-75-16 were the rage, anything to get away from the "FIREPOPS".Other than the big tires, 255-85-16 seem to be in style. My question,is this size becomming popular because it gives you the big tire look, without the inherent big tire problems or am i missing something?

I have had several sets of 255's on other pickups and they have the advantage of being better in deep snow and moderate mud for 90% of the people. To clarify, if you are willing to 4 wheel your 40k pickup like a mud bog racer then the floatation of the wider tires will be beneficial. Deep mud or sand is purely a floatation issue. I am going with Dunlop Radial Rover RV's in a 255 assuming they don't look too small with a lift.

After 1700 plus miles, still love the truck. The Kelly AWR tires are wonderful. 255x85R16 (33x10) Wet traction seems fine, the mud traction is worlds better than the stock tires. The 1 1/2 inch increase in ground clearance is great too. The road noise is minimal with the kelly AWR tires. The only rub on the drivers side rear well by just a little bit, and I am sure I could fix this very easily, but it isn't very much of an issue right now. I didn't have to trim the air dam or adjust the torsion bars either. I think these will be great tires, and they finally make the truck look right. (Warning, purchase of these tires will make you want to spend several hundred on side steps!!!) The speedometer and odometer now read off by 9.3%. The odometer shows 91.5 miles after traveling 100 miles. When it shows 100, I have traveled 109.3 miles.
The RPMS were
Before with 245 (.71/1) now with 255x85 (.71/1)
60 1760 2479 1610 2268
75 2201 3099 2013 2835
85 2494 3515 2282 3216
Worst tank has been 12 mpg with no trips over 5 miles, 17 engine hours and an average speed of 14 mph. With lots of towing. Best tank was 2nd tank with 19 mpg, before adding tires, and during break in. Got 14 last tank with the new tires (after adjustment), but this contained city, country, towing and some high speed interstate short distance.
Took 2 hours to install the right sided Westin CPS step and 1/2 hour to install the drivers side after I figured out how to do it!!! hehe
Best of luck

Dealer in San Diego told me a month ago that he received a buletin from GMC stating that the Allison trannie will issue error codes with larger diameter wheels, so don't do it.I assume other transmissions won't have this problem. Shouldn't be too long before someone comes up with a fix.

Gets, FYI.
One of the other posts stated that the dealer will reprogram up to 265's. otheriwse the other fellows are not having any problems except for the speedo being off by the % increase in size, do the math .
Watch out for mechanical interefernces depending on how big you go. See the other posts, very informative.

Acidburn,
I have had the Bridgestone Mud dueller's 285/75/16 D on mine since new 11/30/2000
with 21,000mi. No rubbing lock to lock not even the dreaded inner fender drivers side fornt where the e-brake cable is. Just 5 turns on the torsion bars each side was all it took. Though these are only 8 ply rated they have a weight rating of 3200ea. Still have at least 1/2 of the tread left. A little noisy but pull through those timber roads on the deer lease like there's no tommorow!
Good Luck,
Paul

i have a set of 255* 85, they work great, look good and with my gps it works out to about 8.3 percent slower on odemeter, did not need any mods to truck for install, the biggest difference i have found is the millage i am doing about 500 miles on a tank of fuel compared to 400 before the change on hiway driving doing about 74 miles per hour at just under 2000 rpm, with my bully dog on number two, also i have now about 10000 miles on tires with no problems :D :D :D
