View Full Version : Line-x Bed liner
I have an appointment to get this sparayed on next week. Thought I would take advantage of this vast pool of experience and ask for comments from those who have it.
Any problems with the product?
Should I give any special instructions before it is installed?
Any tricks I should be aware of?
Got mine done back in May. So far I'm very happy with it. Was going back and forth between Line-X or Rhino. Glad I went with Line-X.
Plan on leaving the truck there, or waiting a looong time for them to spray it. I got the under the rails type. They threw in a free bowtie on the front of the bed, kinda cool.
If you are wanting anything other than black, was told it would take about 3 extra hours, don't know why, just what they told me.
I haven't had a chance to haul any really heavy stuff in the truck yet, but it seems very tough.

I've had mine on for 2 years and it's great. I went with the over the bed rails application. I have a bed cover and when it's down you can't see the linex. I haul a 5th wheel, bed cover off, and lean over the rails a lot -- no scratches! Linex makes a spray treatmenn (it's not just armorall) that works great to keep it looking good. They say it keeps the liner "supple" too.
Good luck,
Bob

I have had the line-x now for about 2 years and no problems. If I could go back I would have had them spray the rear wheel wells also. It keeps the noise and vibrations down and also helps protect against rocks hitting in there. I have also heard that they now offer a top coat that keeps the deep black look(like when it is new) rather than the faded look. Just my thoughts on what I would've done looking back. Great product though!!!

Is the spray treatment something they put on when they install it or a bottle of stuff you can buy from them?
Had my Line-X since truck was new (2001). No problems. Like it very much.

I am very pleased with my Line-X too. Had mine done in Sept. 02'. Did mine under the bed caps. I also had them do the bottom half of my truck, due to the chip from my big tires. On Monday, I'm heading in to have my steps done to match. I had noticed that I had dents on the wheels from loading stuff inside the bed and my Line-X dealer said to "smack it with a rubber mallet." WOW, no more dent and the Line-X didn't even chip off.

Anyway, I am a tradesman, haul tile and tools, I did put a bed mat in just so nothing slides.
I would have definately gone over the rail if I had it to do over again. The bed caps were $90.00, over the rail was only $50.00.
I think the over the rail would be better for me, and it would have been nore durable..

I have the over the rail and I'm very happy with it. It works great with a 5th wheel hitch, which is why I got it. I did have one issue tho, when its sprayed over the rail, it covers the fine gap between your bed sides and the front of the bed near the cab. I stepped on the side of the box while working on my garage door opener and heard a "pop". Turned out the side flexed and it seperated (chipped) a dime size of the liner at the joint. The stuff is on so solid, it didn't seperate the line-x from the paint, the paint itself seperated from the primer. I put it back down with a dab of black silicone, you can't even find it now. Moral of the story is, don't stand on the sidewall if you have an over the rail application  .

I had the TurboLinder spray-in. I reqstd the underside of the rail as over the rail be sprayed. Does it make the rail tuffer/stronger? Not sure but made me feel better.
Installed the B & W turnover ball hitch then sprayed the bed after masking off only the 2-1/2" square receptical for the ball. It seals the small crack where the hitch comes through the bed for a neat factory look with a level bed. This is my third truck with line-x. Great look and performance every time. :D :D

I had mine Line-Xed last weekend. I have been very pleased with it. I got the over the rail since I commonly lean over the rails. I thought it looked better and was more cost effective than bed rail caps. Afterall, why go with a spray-in liner and attach rail caps? Isn't that the whole reason for going spray-in versus drop-in liner?!?

One shop I talked to said they cant do the rails and that any one that said they could is wrong. Said you cant get a straight line. First off I think they are full of crap. Second off even if it dont look perfect it still would look beter than scratches. I will be finding me a new place.
Is Line X kinda rubbery? I have heard that some brands are harder and slicker and some are a bit more grippy. I dont shovel out stuff from my truck so I would prefer the most rubbery outa the bunch......

Ratlover; Line-X is hard and grippy. I had my bed sprayed under-rail at purchase in Oct '01. It's been great. Line-X applications vary from dealer to dealer. The guy in Greenbay that did mine did a fine job. I saw that Matt Wass over in Minnesota had his wheelwells sprayed and when I called the guy in Greenbay he said "no way, I don't know how to begin to spray up in there and vertical." I guess some applicators are more adventurous than others.
SparkyTX,
I got the under the rails done, cause I was installing a ReTrax bed cover and had to use the bed rail caps to cover up the stake pockets.
Now if I had just waited on the Line-X until I installed the B&W hitch, I like the idea of having the Line-X cover the hole around the hitch. Oh well, gotta start some where smile.gif

Line-x uses a real fine wire that is made into the masking tape. It is lined up like a pin stripe before the truck is sprayed and then after sprayed the wire is pulled to cut the line-x rubber for a perfect line and no marks on the truck.
Anyone knows where to get the line-x conditioner mentioned above.

I am getting my truck done on Wed. going with over the rails and in black. was going to have them match the paint (red) but after talking wtih the installer and a friend that has it, and seeing one other truck with the black on red, it looks nice (and saves a few bux)
I will ask about the "conditioner" that you speak about.
oh yeah, the place I am taking it to; So Bay LineX and they will let me use their truck when I drop mine off in the morning... that is service and very cool (they drove my buddy back to work (we both work at the same place... now get this... toyota headquarters) and deliever his truck back to him... I don't want anyone driving mine without me in the truck..hehe)
When they did my bottom half of the truck, they taped around the silver moling trim and insides the doors. It comes down to how much the Line-X dealer wants to do. They also had the truck from 8 in the morning till 8 that night, and said it took alot to make it perfect. The guys here are great that I delt with.

What a nice job... take a look at some pictures.

I am very happy with the looks.
as for the conditioner, that really is a add on that they do, protects and seals from fading, has some uv protector or something like that.
the other thing they sell is the "just Once" spray and he said guys come in after a year or two, buy that stuff and it looks like new.
now, to shop for a camper shell.
The black on red does look really nice. Thanks for the conditioner info. I'll check on some when I go back to my Line-x dealer. :D
Thanks for all the input guys!
I see no negatives posted here. I am going for the over the rail spray but I am going to have him just spray the top and not wrap around on the sides. I have a colour matched cap I put on in the winter and I don't want to see the black in between the box and the cap. The cap moves a bit when installed and causes the foam tape on the underside of it to move. The box ends up getting scratched. I talked to the the installer today and he said he would not be able to guarantee it would not peel because it typically gets rubbed there when you throw in things in over the side. Having said that he said there would be virtually no chance of peeling if the cap was installed.
I have Line-X over the rails & love it..Also had the rails on my retraxx bed cover sprayed so it matches the bed rails. Installer is the most important part of the application.
Everyone should drive their truck 23K miles before having LineX installed! I could not believe how it quieted it down. Better than a new truck. I realize now how much the bed acts as an amplifier for road and suspension noise.
I had the over-the-rail installation done and really like it. I also took my 5th wheel hitch rails out and put them back in on top of the LineX.
After seeing the typical 1/2 inch cap on trucks sitting around the installer's shop we went home and mask one side to get the most pleasing cap. What we thought was the best look was a cap 4 5/8 inches measured from the inside edge of the bed rail. It extends down about an inch on the outside. This picks up the natural shadow line down the front fender and door and looks a whole lot better than the skimpy cap they were putting on as a standard.
Love it so far.
Getting mine done on Wednesday. Over the rail.
Line-X, Turbo Liner,Rhino and the other commercially applied spray-on liners are all very good products. One cannot go wrong with any of them, from what I have read on various boards. I've had Rhino liner on my '96 Chevy C2500 for more than seven years and it still looks great. Hasn't yet begun to peel or crack. Does have some minor fading, though.
Swanny hit the nail on the head when he said the quality of the product depends upon the quality of the guy doing the installation.
Best Wishes,
JohnM
I have proof that it is all in the application. My last three trucks have all been done at the same shop,(Line-x). First job was perfect and looked good when I sold it. Second looked OK, but started to peel in places, and continued to do so until that truck was sold. Now the bed in the D/A looks real nice and no troubles in almost two years. The spray bottle conditioner I have used in the past smells just like Pledge and makes the liner real slick. Does look new afterwards though.
As mentioned above, I had mine done yesterday. Looks great. Better than anticipated. Done by one of the more experienced applicators in Canada and highly recommended. Dave & Dan Jenkins have shops in London and Cambridge, ON. Line-X Canada (http://www.line-xcanada.com)

I've had mine done about 2 months ago. Last week I "walked" a 55 gallon drum of diesel from the front of the bed to the tailgate. Temperature was in the high 80's and the truck had been setting outside all day. Didn't make a single mark on the Line-X. You gotta love this stuff!
A buddy did Rhino... and it bubbled in one
corner of the bed. A couple of 4" bubbles.
He took it back and Rhino tried to fix it and
they could not feather their mistake. It does
not look good. :(
I've got the Line-X right after I purchased the
rig.... Takes a beating and still looks great.
A great product smile.gif

DieselDixon,
Sorry for the late reply. Spray treatment can be bought from the dealer. I go over mine with it once each 6 months. It makes it a bit slick for a few days but then looks and feels like new when it drys. it wasn't cheap at $20 a bottle but I'm still on my first one after 4 treatments. (almost gone though).
