View Full Version : Stainless Steel Exhaust Tip Question

I want to put a Gibson, stainless steel exhaust tip on
my dually. Their 4 inch "Turndown" tip is 18" long
and bolts on to the existing tailpipe.

Their 4 inch "Slash" or "Round Angle Cut" tip is 12"
long (also bolt on). This style does not come in any
longer length than 12".

My question is, other than a preference in appearance,
does the "turndown" style tip have any downside issues.... ???

Looking at the Gibson also and I don't think it makes a difference. My question is that will the 3.5 inch inlet fit over the stock. Tried another brand 3.5 over the weekend and it would not go over the stock. Also the 18" length seems to be a little long. Please keep me informed. Thanks smile.gif

westies,

The 12 inch seems just too short.

Measuring back from the end of the stock
tailpipe.... the bend is at 17 inches which
means that the 18 inch tip will extend the
tailpipe out about one inch.

My muffler guy says the Gibson will slide
over the stock pipe.

I think, I will be ordering the 18 incher!

Turndown = one more bend (restriction) at the end of the exhaust system RIGHT where you want it to meet the atmosphere. Certainly won't help flow...

A turndown will add a little restriction and it will definitely make a ton of DUST. I had one and a dirt driveway or road and even on pavement the exhaust will find dust and deposit it on the trailer or whatever you are towing. I removed it and would reccomend a straight tip.

56Nomad, do you have your exhaust tip yet? If so which one did you order? Do you have a part number, and how did it install?
Thanks ;)

56 Nomad:
Check out Summits' new catalogue. On page 9 it lists the different tips you can buy. There is an 18" slant cut stainless for $43.95. Also on the curved tips, the restriction is negliable(sp?). The reason I don't like the curved tips is when you point them to the ground it shoots dust all over everything. I don't like how they look when pointed back. Just my opinion. tpitt

Thanks Terry,

I went ahead and ordered it too! I'll see
which one I like. This Summit 18 inch needs
to be welded. The Gibson 12 inch bolts on.

Against my pleadings, Diana bought a
new Toyota Corolla today and she's going to
sell her Chevy Lumina :(

Wait till she sees the handsome Duramax emblem that
I'm putting on her deck lid :D :D :D

56 Nomad:
I sure wish I had your money. Ha! Ha! If you don't want to weld it on just get a stainless steel band clamp. Thats how I install them.
Toyota Corolla, when does it end? Put the 12" Gibson on it along with the Duramax emblem.
I'm thinking about going to the A.T.S. stainless duals on mine, but man are they pricey. I guess I'm going to have to "panhandle" some more. Terry

UPS just delivered the Gibson. What a
terrible job of welding at the clamp end
which *IS* going to be an appearance
issue. I'm sending it back ASAP!

Check out the poor quality.... picts @

Howard: That is a pretty poor job of the welding. Must have known it was going on a "Chebby". I haven't ordered any of their exhaust systems yet and if that is the quality of their work I wont either. You know who makes top notch products is A.T.S. (Advanced Turbo Systems) but they are pricey. Hope the one from Summit is a lot better quality. Terry

Thanks 56nomad, can't find the number on their web page, but will call tomorrow. Seen your pics and it looks good. For your info............just trying to finish deal on 56 wagon myself. About 95% restore complete. Getting close to final price and maybe finished by weekend. Problem is that it has been upgraded to 396 auto and I wanted original auto. HO HUM............

That's no problem....... I put a 350 crate engine in the Nomad with a 700-R4 tranny. You will love
the upgrade! :D :D :D

Ouch.... I forgot to leave enough room for
my rear right Tork Lift extention. They now kiss
when the frame mounted tie down! :(

I'll need to remove the spot welds and move the tip further back on the tailpipe about 1 1/2 inches for the clearance required.

Should've used a band clamp. :D Terry

Terry,

I just ground off the spot welds and moved
the tip back about an inch to clear the Tork
Lift. Spot welded it again. The 4" tip really
looks good.

Terry..... I know you love your truck, but as you know--
Chevys are "Like a rock". And it's really OK to use
clamps on GMC trucks. Thats where they got
the name GMC *Got More Clamps* :D :D :D

I went to several local muffler shops looking for a chrome tip for my 03. They all had 3" tips and no 3.5" tips.

One dealer told me he could order it and it would take a week.

The other shop, Muffler Brothers ordered it from their warehouse and had it in about an hour.

I got the Magnaflow stainless steel 5" tip with a 3.5" reducer. They cut part of the old exhuast off and welded the new tip on in a few minutes. Cost me more than I had wanted to pay, about $100 installed.

Pics are in my signature.

Ok, why have the "tip" and not the pipe? That's like having a good saddle and no horse? I understand that you want your truck to have a "look" but doesn't the "look" entail that the truck is inhanced in some way.
I'm not trying to flog...I do not understand having the can and no pipe?

Burner,

I mainly wanted the look of a chrome tip. I have had chrome plated tips on other vehicles and in a matter of months the tips look like crap from the road grime and all.

SO this time I opted for a stainless steel chrome tip. If I could have afforded it, I would have replaced the whole exhaust system with a bigger exhuast, 4" or so.

Burner,

The tip can have a dramatic effect on the tone of the exhaust. A larger tip will normally lower the tone, which is what most owners are looking for.

I have JK's 4" w/tip, (see pictures), the tip is a snug fit over the pipe. Just sliding the tip out (like a trombone) 4-6 inches makes a difference in the tone of the exhaust.

I only wish I had gone with his 4"-5" exhaust for a lower tone, (oh and bigger pipe :D )
