was wondering if anybody has got an answer for alot of static from cb radio when the duramax is running. listening to it when not running comes in great but as soon as I start her up it sounds like a chainsaw shifting thru gears. I have a cobra model that has everything in the handpiece with a thru the glass mount antenna. the antenna has a braided ground cord but instructions said that it should'nt be needed. also the mount does have rear window defroster thru it but it was the only way to install
thanks steve

Steve, I have a console mounted Cobra 29WX NW ST. The ant co-ax is fed under the back seat and out through the cabin air exhaust vent that is down near the floor then up to a magnet mount ant. I do not get any noise with this system.

Steve - I have the same unit you do with everything in the head. No noise, no problems.

Since the noise is only present when the engine is running the most likely culprit is the alternator. There are suppressors that can fix that. The reason the radio is picking it up may be the antenna itself. Some of the thru the glass antennas do not perform well. I got rid of the one I had and went to a Firestick. I never could get the thru the glass to work. When it was on the radio I had static so bad I could not stop it with the engine running. If the antenna ground is not good you will have static.

I would recommend trying a different antenna.

Steve:
I also have the same unit that you have and have no problems. I did install the antenna mount that SOMNDmax devised specifically for our trucks and it is is really grounded well by virtue of design. You can find the thread that I originated about 3 pages back about the mount which is real slick. However you might have to impose on TXDOC or SOMNDmax for pictures since I don't own a digital camera. TXDOC provided me with very good working drawings and I realised an exellent instal.Stu

Steve, I also have the same unit you have. I did have my postive wire tapped into the ignition 2 fuse in the drivers side fuse panel. I got lots of static there. I have since put this radio into my 2500HD and have it hooked straight to the battery. This took away 95% of the static. I don't know where you are getting power from but staight from the battery is the best choice. Get rid of that glass antenna. Its maybe good for 3/4 of a mile at best. I am using a mag mount K40. Glass is an insulator.

Seems to me the logical first step would be to see if the ground makes a difference. CB antennas need a ground and since it's easy and free to do I'd start there. Next I'd hook a power lead directly to the battery and a GOOD ground to go with it. Last thing I'd try would be a new antenna. Got someone with a magnetic unit you can borrow for testing purposes??

I would first check a new ground, then a new power.

Then I would get a new antenna.

I had this problem in my old truck,it was a bad ground.

Steve,

I have the same CB that you have. I used SoMnDMAX's cb antenna mount with a firestick. Looks stock and works great. I power it off a separate fuse block that is powered from the battery. The only contact it gets from the OE fuse block is when to go hot or not (my aux fuse block is only hot when the key is on or in acc. position.)

good luck,
Bob

Do you have a link or picture? I'm looking for a new CB antenna mount and have always used Firesticks.

Thanks....Nathan

You can email me at txdoc2@(removethis)AOL.com for the drawings or look on www.picturetrail.com under memeber txdoc. SoMnDuramax moved his pics and you can search for his posts and find the link, maybe.

TxDoc~
you have e-mail

A good method to reduce static/RFI to your CB is to use coax cable (just like the antenna coax). Use the center conductor for the (+)positive lead and the bradded for the (-) negative lead directly to your battery and on to your CB. Wire in a 3 amp fuse from Radio Shack and you will have a good shielded power source that should be static free. It would also be a good idea to provide a CB radio chassis ground wire to a grounded metal spot on your truck.

Hey Steve,
I got a Cobra mounted into my console(thanks to the guys at the diesel page) and a wilson 5000 mag mount and I don't have any problems with static. I agree that it might be your antenna. The guy at the cb shop told me that the thru glass antenna don't give you a good groung which causes problems in sending and recieving. Good Luck :D Also if anyone is interested I have a 3 stack tower that will work in a vehicle without a console. It will hold a cb,scanner and one more radio item. It's what they use in emergency vehicles. I took it out of my dooley and now have no use for it. If anyone is interested e-mail me.

On the thru the glass, I ran across this info:

GLASS MOUNTED CB ANTENNAS
Compliments of Firestik

thanks for the responses, I replaced the glass antenna with a mounted one in the location across from the radio antenna much like others have done, it took some time and I made my own mount I think that would be similar to the others much better now, so how do I get the old antenna off the inside of the glass without hurting the defroster

I would get something like a hard plastic wedge and just put pressure behind it and let it peel itself off. Don't force it though. If it still sticks then I would take some Acetone and apply it to the sticky pad with a Q-Tip and then peel it off. The Acetone will disolve the adhesive without hurting the glass. I don't know how the RRD is attached to the window though so you may want to try it (Acetone) on a junk car.

Use a hair dryer to heat the unit, then use a plastic wedge to pry it loose. DO NOT use acetone if you use the hair dryer!

Bob
