Ok, where are they? I have had 3 GM trucks with "in cab" air filters, an 00,01 & 02. I thought that this 03' would have them in the same place... nope, not there. I took the two screws out and left the third only to find out that there is not an "inlet" under the dash for the filters? Did they make a different box or what? I have been to two dealerships asking for a filter. Neither dealer had a 03' cabin filter but both had a part number. AT the second store I asked to see a schematic that is apparently not produced at this point, only a part number is given.

Burner,
Can't help you with where they are but...isn't the dual temp control new for 03? They probably had to redo a lot of the duct work to get different temp air for each side of the truck. If you find out, please let us 03'ers know smile.gif

I understand late 03's no longer have the filter option. Seems people were not changing them. Checked mine and no provisions for filter.

My bought my truck in early November. My salesman knew how important it was to me to have the in cab filter. If the truck does not have the filter.....it will..or something. Low volume air is the result of clogged filters, nothing more. I don't think that simi-stopped up filters will dammage the fan or make it over heat. The old sustems were easy to clean out. I'd diconnect my battries and wash the system out, with a hose pipe. Most people would be amazed at how much dirt and stuff came out of the system. It always seemed to get ride of that "weird" smell in the AC vents. Anyway, the new systems have so much more crap in them. I would not want to do this to my new 03'.
-- Ok I'm in a RANT  This truck cost more than my loaded 02... It should have the dag-gum filters!

Back when I had my 2001 Suburban, I brought it to the dealer for the the 15000 mile service. One of the items listed there was changing the in cab air filters.

The dealership said it wasn't necessary, but I insisted, since I had them in other cars and knew how dirty they got. As it turns out, the "tech" that was doing my oil change didn't even know where they were!

I got out the owners manual and he and I found them together. He said "Hmm. I've never changed a set of these".

Nobody was changing them because, at least in my dealer's case, they were being told it wasn't necessary!

I have an early '03 DMax, so I'm going to look around. If I can fit filters in there (even if the slots are blank) and I'm to go ahead and try to install them.

Someone that works at the GMC assembly plant mentioned several months ago that the ductwork is new and there are no filters.

I'm the guy that works at the plant. It's true, there is no longer a provision in the 03 model vehicles for the filters. I questioned our "engineering staff" and was told Gm saw it as a waste because people weren't changing them. Early 2003 models were supposed to have the opening for the filter, just no filters. Later 2003 models had the plastic retooled and no longer have provisions for adding filters. The cavity is still there, just no access to it. If someone wanted to fashion a cover, they could cut the plastic housing in the same place the filters are located on the 01-02 models and install filters themselves. I personally inspected the new plastic on the HVAC units and everything is the same minus the access. Hope this helps.

ACCRASH,
Would the filter size be the same? So if we had an early '03, or made an access port, we could use the same filters as '02? If we just knew the part number?

Thanks, Don

Ya know what's goofy? I have the part numbers in my manual. Good grief Charlie Brown.

ACCRASH, thank you for the input. I guess I'll get out the o'le roto and see what I can do. Can you tell me what or which plastic to use as a "bond" for parts? I will most likly need to fashen a "bolt hole" in the back.---- The air still moves in the primary direction, yes? Will the filters hender any of the......nawh, forget it. I'm cut'n plastic and making it work. ;)

Don G,
Yes, the filters are exactly the same.

Burner,
Not sure what you mean by "bond for parts". As far as the bolt hole goes, the boss for the screw hole is still there if you look in the back, just no hole drilled in it.

Glad to be of service.

Sorry it took so long to respond. I was out in the boonies for a week and could not get on-line.

Just did some checking and everything is exactly the same on 03 models except, instead of a cover, the access hole is closed up with plastic. The bosses are still there to attach the cover and the cover is available through the dealers. Not sure about price or part number, but can get them if anyone is interested. You just need to get a cover and trim out the plastic with a dremel tool or something similar and you can use the cab filters just like the 01-02 models. Good luck.
