I only found one previous post on this topic
with no definative answer or photos.

Has anyone mounted them under the hood,
behind the front bumber?

Any photos?

I'm looking at the Hadley Dual Black Metal Underhood Horn Kit

This is gonna sound hoky but since they are pretty loud why not right on the frame rail behind the engine? I can't think of a good spot under the hood. My horn quit working so you have me thinking. I suppose I'd have to turn off the horn beep with the door locks feature. The neighbors would love me at 2 AM.

My Dad mounted 24" air horns to the underside of the hood on a '69 chev. I don't know if the inner structure would hold. Sheet metal was a bit thicker back then.

From where are you getting the air horn kit?

While towing the race car on two separate trips, someone has started drifting over into my lane either because they were not paying attention or because they decided to change lanes and somehow didn't see my bright blue 2500HD with the 24' trailer on the back.

In both cases, my dad and I decided that an airhorn would do a better chance of getting their attention than the factory horn.

I mounted my Hadley Dual Black Metal air horns, compressor, 1 1/2 gallon air tank and WATER SEPERATOR under the vehicle, on the driver's side, tucked away in the frame rail. The air tank provides air for the rear air bags and the air horns. I have the twin needle gauge and the two switches for the air bags built into the center consol with a backing plate.
My intention was to get the horns located as far forward as possible to keep the sound out of the cab.

How much pressure does a good set of horns require? I'm thinking of using my propane tank.

I did the deed. Bought the Cadillac of air horns and
ordered the Hadley Bully Series Kit No. H00964H

As soon as it is delivered, I'll put it in with photos

56Nomad,

I wish you would have checked here first, I found the same one at Camping World for over $100 less (presidents club pricing) it is $197.10. Anyone find it cheaper yet?

have to agree with the air horn thing, have the horns but looking for a big pump. Any Ideas???
I can honestly say I've never had a terrifying experience in the race car, but on the otherhand going to and from the track is like putting your life on the line

Well I was told that the working pressure in propane tank is 350 PSI and that lines purchased must meet that spec in case of a regulator failure ... Unless this guy was pulling my leg but I doubt it ...

So toot toot ,Hoot,I think you may still need the regulator not to blow out a diaphragm ......

You don't need a big pump but a large enough tank. Yes a propane tank when charged runs 350 psi. I use a virgin LP tank as a portable air source. Just buy a POL fitting and convert off it to standard air line.

My neighbor is into train horns. The dude with the web site has a serious setup. During competitions with enough volume they'll blow incredible decibles. Everyone has to have a hobby!!!

I have always loved those train horns, just too much money for what it's worth. I just like the fact that I live about 5 miles from a train track and I can hear it when they blow the horns.

I don't think it is the same model at camper world. The model I purchased
is H00964H As far as I can tell Hadley only has one model that is black and under the hood, plus the descriptions are the same?

These are mounted in the rear inside the body/frame area.

Hoot..... those horns gotta wake up a sleeping passenger

Thanks for DieselDixon...... but I need some
more advice :D :D

I'm getting ready to hook up this air horn. The directions call for running a wire
with 20 AMP fuse to be connected to an "Ingnition Activated" accessory terminal
in the fuse box. I've got the the wiring diagram at:
http://members.cruzio.com/~quailman/wiring.jpg

I'm weak with electrical and would appreciate if one of you might suggest where
under the hood or dash do I need to spice or hook this power source to the
compressor. Thanks

Nomad,

Those horns are unreal.

You can pick up power at the little red box on the drivers side under the hood. The place where you hook up the jumper cable. Just use an "eye" type crimp on terminal and be sure to use a properly sized inline fuse. There are some aux terminals on it that are easy to tie into. This is direct battery power.

This 1 1/2 gallon tank serves well for air bags and air horns. Don't forget the water seperator. The separator, compressor and air horns are on the same frame rail, just forward of this tank. See my previous post in this thread.

mfontana,

I like your set up..... thanks for the photos.

Electrical questions for you:

Are your horns wired into the existing horn wires as the direction call for?

And, where did you tap into for the compressor juice wire. The directions call
for running a wire with 20 AMP fuse to be connected to an "Ingnition Activated"
accessory terminal?
The Hadley wiring directions are at:
http://members.cruzio.com/~quailman/wiring.jpg

56NOMAD: Thanks.
Are your horns wired into the existing horn wires as the direction call for? ANSWER - YES - This is a fail safe. If the compressor fails for some reason, the regular horn works.

And, where did you tap into for the compressor juice wire. The directions call
for running a wire with 20 AMP fuse to be connected to an "Ingnition Activated"
accessory terminal? ANSWER-YES-THE ACCESORY TERMINAL IN THE FUSE BOX UNDER THE HOOD. I wouldn't want the compressor starting up when I wasn't using the truck.
56Nomad-The fuse box in your 2002 and my 2003 are different so I can't tell you specifically which one in your fuse box.

bolt. Great spot for them.... they don't touch
anything. http://members.cruzio.com/~quailman/Horns.jpg

where did you guys buy your accessories for the air system....where did you get the tank from the same place as you bought air rides from....what pressure high limit are you using....and what air solenoids are you using....I wanted to do this for a long time...but just haven't had the time...and now I have some time...but was just wondering what everyone else is using....thanks dmaxster

They're installed. Sounds great. All the parts
came with the Hadley kit. I did have to fabricate
a few things such as the bracket and
beefed up support plate for the air tank.
Neigbhors love me now. :D :D :D

Here is a photo before I tightned down the
compressor and added some sheet metal
to protect the compressor from mud and
debris.

Job well done, looks great. That is the same kit I used. The additional taps I installed were for the twin needle gauge and the rear air bags with a water seperator in line. It's still cool and not humid here in Connecticut but I am amazed at the amount of water the seperator eliminates.

mfontana,

I called Hadley about the need for a water
separator. He said I should have no problem
here in California. Service tech said the
North East states have issues of water build up.

He says most folk that develop any problems
after a couple of years just empty the tank
of the water and reinstall.

AlanL

I looked at some of these kits on-line and they mentioned an auxiliary hose for the tank...

Obviously this compressor and tank isn't enough to run an air gun, but what about pumping up tires or using low pressure for a brake bleeder or something?

Just wondering if I could ammortize my investment on this setup to both wake people up on the road *and* to adjust tire pressures, etc... at track facilities where there isn't air available.

56Nomad,

Now you did it, after listen to you I just had to have a set of my own, so I just ordered them from Camping World. I searched high and low for them on the internet and it seems that Autobarn and Camping World are the only 2 companies that sell them, and I can't believe there was over a $100 difference in price, go figure...

Thanks for all the input and pictures you posted, should make my job easy.

Hey is that picture of your truck at Glamis or Pismo?

Pismo it was. I aired down the six tires
and the dually went every my quad would go

What a blast....... That's where we're headed
next week after leaving the Gran Prix at Leguna Seca.

As far as I can tell the hose only comes with the bigger Hadley horns. They all come with the same compressor it's just that the bigger horns come with a larger capacity reserve tank.

If you want to go to air horns why no go all the way. Go to your local truck stop or truck parts store, they can hook you up. When you get a good enough set where they mount isnt important. However making sure you dont accidentaly hit the switch at 2 am is very important. If you have the second alt location open http://www.truckn-store.com has a belt driven compressor avaliable, air tanks and hardware can be found there too.
