I had a friend looking at my new '03 Duramax, he stated that the only problem with it was it was too much engine for the Allison especially in OD. He stated that if I was towing always use "tow/haul no OD" mode due to the fact that the Duramax would damage the planetary gear in the tranny if I got on it to pass or race up a hill in OD???? I am not much of a transmission guy, but is there any truth to what he says? or just old rummors?

BS with a stock engine. Add a few stacked performance boxes and you'll have some tranny slippin.

Your friend is not correct. The Allison looks after itself very well. I tow 14,000 lbs. in my RV in OD without a problem and with stock equipment.

I do use Tow Haul most of the time and sometimes I use OD Lockout if I am going through lots of up and down hills. Otherwise, I let the transmission take care of itself without any assistance or problems.

Rumor, total fiction at stock level ... The power in 03 is unchanged same rating as previous years 300/520 ...

Jealous....of course who isn't? He is a Cum..ns owner. I had heard this before and figured it was one of those Duramax "urban legends".

It was stated on the GMInsiders Forum, by a guy that is a DieselPage Moderator, that the Allison can handle 600ft.lbs. You won,t hurt one with a stock DURAMAX. And this Moderator knows Allisons.

rcarbs...My neighbor is a new Cumm ns owner and he is always giving me a load of s#%*, "when are we going to race" and "why is the hood up is it broken" kind of comments. But when I say lets go to the drag strip he gets real quiet :D Probably afraid he is going to break his auto trans :eek: The score on my street d-max 3, cumms 2, ps 1.

The Allison in my "other" truck handles 400/1,400/55,000 lbs :eek: with no problem at all -- so maybe Allison knowns how to build those ity bity ones too. :rolleyes:

You will not break the planetaries. Unless you do something completely stupid. Even a hopped up Dmax won't break the planetaries. The lockup clutch will slip, bands will let go, and on (provided the protective functions of the Allison are overridden). Not the planetaries.

As for being jealous, not me. And I got a neighbor's truck we're working on, that'll make you think twice at the track. GB Transmission (triple lock TC, custom VB, and billet input shaft), and twin turbos are on the way. 70 pounds boost, here we come! :D

ABSOLUTELY! This is DEFINITELY a MAJOR RISK with the Allison behind the Duramax! The reason most people don't experience it is that their aluminum heads give way first! :D :D :D
