Am I reading correctly on the new 05's having rear drum brakes? I'm still running a 95 burb, with lousy brakes, thinking of upgrading in the spring to a new D-Max, now I see that they have drum brakes! Anyone have a real good answer on this?

The drums are only available on the 1500's. The 2500HD's and 3500's will still have rear disc.

Relax. Life's not so bad smile.gif

I wouldn't worry about the drums IF they get the dynamic proportioning set correctly.

As for Dmax, I hear next year in the Sub, slightly detuned with 4l80E...

I REALLY wish GM would pull it's head out, and release SPECIFIC VEHICLE statements rather than this blanket crap they are doing. 17" wheels, revised cooling fan system, drum brakes, ALL for the "puppy" trucks...

A slightly modified 4L85E could handle LLY's couldn't it?

Page 106 of the September 2004 issue of Truckin magazine shows a 2003 Chevy 2500HD Duramax powered truck being fitted with aftermarket tires/wheels. On page 108, it shows the rear drums on this truck.....

So it appears at least in 2003, GM began using rear drums on at least some of its 2500HD trucks....

I had heard a rumor a while ago that suggested that some E-brake components in the rear disk brakes were becoming a problem for their owners due to rust/corrosion in harsh environments. I suspect the midwest rust belt or a coastal area could contribute to rusting of the rear emergency brake components due to a lack of use. Unlike the emergency brake components in a drum brake equipped truck that are part of the regular brake system, the disk brake setups utilize a separate small drum and shoe components inside the rotors for the E-brake. Since many owners don't use the E-brake on a regular basis, the related components become less reliable over time.

I think there's a lesson here for those owners who have a rear disk brake equipped truck... That being to use the E-brake more often.

You can read more about this topic in the 2500HD/3500 Trucks & Drivetrain forum (http://forum.thedieselpage.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=7;t=005923).

MP your correct on the E brake issue! My buddy has a 2003 1500 Sub , the truck has 39K on it and the E brake componants where wasted.... salt up in north east? who knows

Oh boy, here we go again with odds and ends on future trucks. If they plan on a D-Max suburban I may lean that way, but if its a little V-6 D-Max, I'm not sure I'm ready for that yet. If its the proven 6.6 that is cut back somewhat, then I'd go that route. After driving a suburban for 29+ years I may find it hard to go with an open bed pickup, but now that the family left the nest so to speak, I may not need seating for 8. Well I'll keep looking and listening till spring, then make my move.
Tanks again for all the information. ;)

Dont just blame the salt, blame the design too. My buddy has had his e-brakes lock up twice on his 2002 2500 within the first year.

good luck

I test drove a 2005 2500HD. Rear disc brakes. I have a 2005HD on order. Also has rear disc brakes.

They've been talking about the 'Burb with Duramax/4L85E for about as long I've been promised a raise at work....too long.

time to git-r-done already

I would gladly trade the rear disks for drums on my 2003 3500. Both rear disk rotors were gone after 6500 miles! The service manager said he has seen several like this. He blamed the dirt and mud clods falling out of the wheels onto the rotor were like a grinder. At least they covered the repair.

time to git-r-done already Ain't that the truth. I've given up waiting. Anybody want to buy a used CC/SB D/ZF? I need a Suburban, even if it burns gas.

No offense John, you've generally had the straight scoop, but we've all heard that a time or two before, and I believed it every time.
