I noticed last night that when i shut the engine off i heard a strange noise coming from up front in the engine compartment. Then i noticed it agin tonight after coming home from work when i shut it down. So i started it up, rolled down the window and shut it off to see if i could hear better. All i can tell is it is coming from up front and it sounds like a high pitched GRRRRR(kinda like a duck getting strangled, not that i would know what that sounds like :D ) and it only last for a second. My truck only has 4500 on the clock and i dont notice any decrease in power. In fact i was just thinking that it just started to break in good and gaining a little more power. Thanks for any help

Could just be your serpentine belt slipping a bit.
Mine will chirp if I shut it down with the a/c on if the compressor clutch is engaged. The engine pulley wants to stop right NOW and the rotating mass of the alternator, a/c compressor, power steering pump etc. keep the belt moving for a second or so. Doesn't do it all the time and hasn't been a problem in 25,000 miles...

I dunno if this pertains to ur problem, but its a diesel, when you shut it off the engine has so much compresion that it stops immediatly and the surp. belt keeps going b/c of the accesesories(alt, A/C, etc.) and makes a sqeak and makes the whole truck shake upon shut down. total normal, my Dmax does it, my PSD does it a lil worse, and big rigs do it even worse. Next time u see a big-rig shut down, watch and listen, the whole thing violently shakes and makes a loud sqeaky squak.

Mine must be gettin "SLOPPY" it doesn't chirp any more...... :rolleyes:


What tiss the life expectancy of the serpentine??? If over, under 20k or so, how's about furnishing me with the correct gator number and link......PLSE......

GatorBack # 4061115 fits great on the '01s with the big alternator (140 amp I think?).

Replacing the stock belt with the Gatorback has ELIMINATED all of the shut down noise.

It might also be the turbo spooling down after shutdown.

And don't forget about the radio. It has a fan that cools the amp. It's quite noticeable after you shut down.

Mac,

I have heard that most rubber parts--hoses and belts are good for 60k and or 3 years. After that you could expect them to fail any time.

6 years and 220,000 miles on my last truck. Not one rubber part under the hood had to be replaced. But when the alternator went down the tube, I replaced the serpintine belt to be safe. That was at about 186,000 miles.

I have always read that belts and hoses are good for atleast 4 years. But who really knows?

Thanks for part number .....I'll keep it and inspect my belt for wear ......I have the Jumping idler symptoms so mine may be a wee bit stretched.......

My truck started to develop a chirping noise as the compressor clutch engages/disengages. It's a high pitched chirp. At idle I can watch the clutch engage/disengage, but it's not noisy until the RPM's go up. I can live with the noise. I just hope this doesn't become problematic for the clutch or compressor.

The Helms manuals have many pages of belt noise fixes so its got to be a common complaint to the dealers.
