Truck is a 2001 Duramax/Allison and when it is up to operating temp, there is a very strong burning oil smell, as if you spilled motor oil on the exhaust manifold. But there is no oil on the exhaust manifold. Any ideas?
There is a breather hose under the front of the engine that may accumulate oil and drip.
Also make sure all your fluids are toppped off.
Look for seepage in the back of the motor possibly?
Remote possibility you ran through some goo on the road and it got on th eexhaust. Take a close look under the truck at the entire exhaust system.
Don't forget, these are "oil burners".
Recent oil change? depending on type of oil, parafins melting can give off a strong smell with new oil.
There is a recent thread on this subject in the Duramax Members Forum.

Thanks very much for the replies.
I get the same smell using Rotella. It's even worse with the winter cover. 3,000+ miles on my recent change, mostly with cover on, still smells. It has to remind you it's a diesel somehow.
