Just picked up the DMax today and in reading the manual I see that they recomend 5W40 for cold areas. The truck is kepted in a garage at night and will be plugged in when I am at work do you all still think that I should change my oil soon to a lower visc?

I cant really comment on your weather patterns since I am from Texas, but use common sense. I would personally say yes, for those days it is not plugged in, but you might have better luck asking SlowMnDmax or Kennedy since they are local yankees.... ;)
Plugging in the block heater makes for quick heat, fast cranking and good starts, BUT does very little for the oil in the pan! I prefer a pad type oil pan heater for this reason.
Mobil Delvac 1 would be my choice in a 5w40.
BTW, my uncle (and namesake) lives in Minocqua.
