First, I have checked all prior posts, but had a question. At just about 1000 miles the annoying "Ticking" began. Are any other 2003's having this issue?

I just changed the oil the other day. I use Delo 400.

44,500 miles. Tick came back for a couple of days. Now it's almost gone again.

It was pretty loud when the truck was brand new then went away around 10,000 miles.

Definately oil related.

Mine has "ticked" since the day I picked it up. Salesman and I concluded it was moisture dripping on the hot exhaust (raining the day I bought it). Boy were we wrong! Now, at 7100 miles, it's still ticking- but seems to be getting better. Not near as loud as when new.

Using Shell Rotella T 15W-40 & OEM filter if it matters.

My 03 also started ticking after first oil change at 1000 miles. It's loud and very annoying when standing outside the truck.

I sure hope it goes away.....?

My 03 started ticking before it hit 100 miles!! Changed the oil at 500 miles with Rotella T 15w-40 and PF2232 oil filter and the ticking did not change. I noticed yesterday that the ticking is not that loud anymore. When it first started, it sounded like a very loud type writter. Maybe it is better to get it early so it will go away quicker?? :D

Boy was it cold this morning.... -3F before wind chill!! May have to consider synthetic if winter decides to stay around for a while and not go back into the 50's and 60's that we have been enjoying.

This is my first diesel. It makes all kind of noise I am not familiar with. I have read a lot about the "ticking" and many think it is oil related. I doubt this sincerely. Mine may or may not tick, I'm not sure but I can tell you this- if you are using a premium quality oil, Rotella, Delo, Delvac, Pennzoil, whatever, of the correct diesel spec, the oil isn't the problem.

The lubricants industry is extremely competitive and there are only a handful of additive companies supplying the hundreds (literally) of lubricants blenders.

The tick is most likely a design/tolerance/assembly/adjustment issue. Can the DMax valves be adjusted? Are they adjusted manually when the engines are assembled?

If any of you guys are in or near Central FL I would like to meet you and have you tell me if any of that racket coming from under my hood is "tick".

Oil related..... in reference to the memo/TSB put out by GM addressing the tick.

It said it had something to do with entrained air and bubbles popping in the main bearings, possibly due to high oil pressure. The memo stated that it was a normal engine sound.

What are we two years into this engine and not one problem traced or related to the tick?

31,000 Miles and have always used Delvac 15-40. Ticked continuously until around 10,000 miles. Now truck ticks for a day or 2 after oil change then gone till next change. I would say this indicates oil / tolerance related.

Mine ticked from day one and now with a little over 9k on the clock it is almost completly gone. I will hear it if idling for a long period of time but so quiet you can not really notice it.

I've had the tick since day one. It was almost gone right before first oil change at 3,000 miles. Changed the oil and it came back. I'm right at 4,000 miles today.

Mine ticked right off the lot. I had dealer change oil at 500mi. 3000mi. 7000mi. now have 8600mi, and still ticks but runs great. Don't worry about it, it doesn't hurt anything.

I did have a chance to drive a 2002 last week and I must say that it was MUCH quieter inside than my 03. Very little engine noise. They must have taken away some of the sound insulation this year to save more money, along with the under hood light ect.ect.

Hey Guys- Not to beat a dead horse here, but My last two oil changes have been with Mobil Delvac 1, and my intermittent tick is COMPLETELY gone. FWIW: I tried Rotella 15-40-- Ticked just as bad as when new. The Rotella Synthetic was next-- the thing sounded like a typewriter brigade was under the hood!! Third try was regular Delo 400. Not any better than the dino Rotella.
Truck is at 10.5 K miles as of today. Haven't heard a single tick since the Delvac 1. The stuff is pricey, but I will pay the extra just to be rid of that dang noise!! A side benefit (for me anyways in the frozen tundra of WI) is real easy spinning on cold start-up. Now if I could just get rid of the wind-blown trim-FLAPPING noise before I hurt someone....

I lost the tick at about 5,000 mi.Just the other day at 18,500 I heard it again for the first time since. It is real faint now though.(Amsoil 15-40 syn).
Chico, two things you can do to rid yourself of that annoying flap:
1.Remove the x-terminator.
2.Glue the windshield moldings.

1200 miles - no tick...

5-40 Mobil Delvac installed with just 23 miles on the truck due to cold weather here in Minneapolis.

I will have the oil changed next week - still Delvac - we will see if the tick developes then. My 02 Silverado had the tick real bad...
