I am seriously considering a new timing chain for the wifes 95 Suburban. It is showing 320000 mi. We are having some unpredictable starts and other small misc. problems. I was wondering about the gear drive. How much more does it cost? where do you get them? Would you do it on a 300000+ mile vehicle? Thanks for your help!

If the rest of the motor is sound It sure can't hurt. Some of the vendors listed here carry the set. I ordered from DSG and got excelent service. replaced mine and IP and injectors/glowplugs at 164000. Did the cooling upgrades then too.

Gear drives run about $350 for your outfit and chain & gear set about $140.
I did chain & gear plus cooling at 155,000 miles I figured I have about 300,000 engine life so half way through the chain work well and wasn't that warn or streached. I had had put out a couple thousand and didn't want to lay out another additional $200+ for timing gear set.
Personally I would not spend the extra on an engine with 320,000 miles. I would put gears in at overhaul if I were to keep the Subarban. Just MHO.
