View Full Version : How Hot is to Hot?
I have an exhaust temp installed post turbo on a 2005 Duramax, but as close to the turbo as possible.
I pull a 14000lb 5th wheel and will often see the exhaust temp reach the 1000 deg. point.
Is this to high on a sustained basis?
Talked to two preformance dealers today;
one said 950 max, the oter said 1050 max is OK.
I'd like to your opinions.

christo, I wonder myself what temps are going to hurt my engine as I just put gauges on my truck also. However, it is not unusual for my egt temps to reach 1000 without a trailer. I think most of the knowledgable people on this site think that 1000 is ok but not to exceed 1350 for more than a few seconds. I think I remember several guys posting temps of around 1400 and even some posted higher temps. I think that they all said not to hold those temps for very long.
Post turbo is much more difficult to judge, but we've seen stock LLY trucks run up to 1400
John, thanks for the reply.
If I moved the probe to pre-turbo what do you think the max. SUSTAINED safe temp. would be?
Christo.
I've found you loose about 200* across the turbo. I run one both before and after. I'd say sustaining temps above 1400 for long could be damaging to your engines health. I've seen 1350 out of stock LLYs.

1400 pre or post turbo and does the same apply whether it's a LB7 or LLY? I'm ssuming pre since most power boxes defuel around 1250 and above.
I got back from a 1200 mile trip with our boat(12,000lbs.)The exhaust temp I saw were max 1100deg. pre-turbo with the ac on and running about 75mph. I have a 2002 K3500.

I pulled the new camper home last week from the dealer. Cruise set at 69 mph and bucking a bit of a wind. On level 0 my egt's were around 1205, when I switched to level 1 they jumped up to 1255. It was the 1st pull I have done since installing Edge/Juice - I was surprised to see them run that high on level gound! I won't even tell you what the mileage indicator said...

About a year ago there was a post to a link to Garret's web page. In the text to the link it was stated the turbo was designed to deal with a max of 1400* pre turbo on the LLY . at this point the housing will begin to stick and maybe not change geometry????? 1350 sustained temps was ok. the LB7 I think will deal with much more heat then a lly. IMHO

Puting the sensor to close to the tubro will give you a fals reading. The best spot is right in the exhaust manifold. The turbo can read 100-300c higher do to enegy build up in the turbo.
