clearing codes

Someone told me to clear the codes that I have in the service 4 wheel drive is to disconnect the batteries and then put the two ends together for five minutes?????????

Know anybody with a MT2500 Snap on many more shops have those than a T2 or it's clone, only way I know for sure to clear the codes is with a scan tool, I have never heard that shorting pos & neg were required, nor do I know if codes get cleared when power is off, OBD II PCMs are smarter than OBDI my TDC offset does not clear when I shelve my PCM, which allows me to go between reflash and stock PCM rather easily.
