View Full Version : Yet another fuel filter question

What is the finest filter that fits in the stock location?

Would there be a problem with adding a pre filter, say a 10 micron on the frame near the rear of the truck?

This seems like a good solution to the fuel filter problems, if there is a decent fine filter available for the stock head.

There is only one manufacturer of our OEM filter..... RACOR/Parker
and unfortunately there are no alternatives.

Many of us are adding a 2 micron absolute filter because the
OEM filter does not efficently remove the smaller contamination
from our fuel.

Please read the following thread....... it's long but lots of info:
http://forum.thedieselpage.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=3&t=005155

If you add a 2 micron absolute filter pre-filter, you are going to
need to change it out quite frequently (3000-5000) miles. That is
why many of us are installing the secondary filtration post OEM.

I see that ndamico just installed a pre OEM
CAT filter....... it is a very tall filter and may just
go the 15,000 miles before the need to change it

Victory Red,

Here are my costs for my set up..........

$25.41 Parker Hose (7 ft needed)
$82.38 Filter head w/ R60 filter
$2.83 (4) Worm Gear Clamps
$2.72 (2) Barbed Brass Fittings
$3.95 (1) Brass petcock

CAT and Stanadyne's filter assembly costs are very similar as I recall

I believe that Greg Landuyt (Landuytg on our forum)
http://www.lubespecialist.com
has the entire Racor set up with brackets and all

I've seen your pictures looks like a nice install. Can you give me the part number for the filter head?

Who's running the Racor setup next to the A/C pump? I lost my link.

LoneEagle is running his filter next to the AC compressor. Nice setup.

Victory Red,

....The part number is 660R2

Jelisfc, roegs,

....LoneEagle's mounting the filter over next to the AC compressor
....looks good, but when changing out the filter I wonder if spillage
....of fuel could end up on belts, and top of the engine, etc. Mounting
....the secondary under the air box as well as our OEM being located
....where it is, any spillage when changing filters always ends up on the ground.

I'm using a 690R2 which is longer than the 660 so it won't fit at the A/C location. Bigger is better.

Hoot,

I probably get 20 junk emails a week telling me that
"bigger is better"

Thanx for the refresher.

56Nomad, I like Lone Eagle's because it is on top. I'm not that worried about fuel spillage. It has to be easier to change filters during the winter.

Thanks for the info Nomad. Today I'm stopping by my local Fuel Systems shop and getting a filter head, filter and fuel line. I take it you got the 3/8" barb fittings/clamps and petcock from a hardware store? The bracket is easy since I have access to just about any type of metal and a CNC mill to make it for me.

Victory Red,

I got the petcock & clamps at Orchard Supply Hardware and
the barbed fittings at a local auto parts store.

Well my local supplier for my Diesel parts told me today it's a 2 week backorder for the 690R filter head assembly. I may have to hit up Landy for his kit. It'll take a little fun out of 'doing it myself' but hey, 2 weeks is a long time especially with a 3 day weekend coming up. Landy if you see this I presume you have both the 660 and 690's in stock????

Hoot,
I see you've got the 3157 LED bulbs in. I've been looking at those myself(since I already have an 03 with the goofy tailights) do you have any daytime/nightime pictures on how bright these puppies are????

Victory Red,

You have the great option of putting in a CAT assembly
with their 2 micron absolute filter. Any of the larger
CAT dealers have them available today :D

You can set it up the same way and either choose their
short filter or their long filter..... just as with Racor

Hmmm, choices choices, now I have to find a Caterpillar dealership in my area. I wish I didn't have to work for a living so I could just scrounge around looking for things to do to my truck!

Any care to toss over the part numbers I'd need for a Cat assembly????? :D

Hoot,

No, I'm just Rick in Milwaukee :D
Today I picked up the parts for the filter, base, cover plate, bolts, short and tall filter from FABCO(large CAT repair shop and dealer). Still need in/out fittings, fuel line(what size? just so I don't have any suprises) and clamps. I also brought home some 1/4 thick aluminum angle(several size lengths) in an attempt to find a suitable location for mounting. I hope to use the tall somewhere in the engine compartment, but not sure as of yet.

Anyhow thanks Nomad(and Dura-Max3 for the initial part collection).

I hope to collect the final parts tommorrow and install sunday. I'll let everyone know how it goes and snap off a few photos. The upside is these filters are CHEAP! $12 for the short $17.68 for the tall. Most expensive part was the filter head at $65.65. I've got a friend with an 03 GMC Max waiting to see how it goes. If if works well, I'm sure he'll follow suit.

1/2" ID fuel line.

You asked about the LED. Somebody on PUTC asked me the same day.
