Same for me. Mobil 1 Delvac at 5K miles.

That's probably WAY overkill, but then oil is cheap and engines are expensive.

I hate to say it but I am going with the idiot light on the dash, this truck makes very few short runs and I am not towing much lately. For the majority of it's runs it up to full temp. I did change it out 3x's in the first 5,000 miles -- 500, 1,500 & 5,000 mile marks.

I made several early changes during break-in, but I've been on a steady 7,500 mile interval since 5,000 miles and 2 years now with excellent oil analyses. I do, however, have a dual remote oil filtering system.

I had been running 10K miles on Amsoil 15W40, using the dual remote bypass filter. I change the SDF26 full flow filter at 5K miles and the BE100 bypass at 10K. Oil analysis at 10K shows no problems.
Today, for the first time, I installed 5W40 Mobil Delvac 1. At the start of the cold winter season, I thought I'd try this lower weight oil, that should be better for cold starts.
I'm not sure about towing the 5ver with this lighter weight oil in summer though. May go back to the 15W40 in April, before our Spring Break Camping Trip to Florida.

i have changed mine at 2500 miles, than after that i have followed percentage life on the display witch works out to be around the 15k, my dealer has sent oil samples to be analized when the oil is changed and all samples come back ok, i have been told oil life is not difficult to know, i also use their oil, i think it is 10w30 petrocanada :D

Modified,
What brand of dual remote system did you put on your truck? I too use 15w 40 Amsoil synthetic oil and change the oil between 7500 to 10000 miles. I have been thinking about putting the Amsoil dual remote filter system on but I haven't done it yet. Any suggestions.

2003 GMC D/A CC
About 16000 miles on odometer and no problems so far......yet! :D

Delvac 1 is not lighter than Amsoil 15-40. It is fine to use year round and under the heaviest loads on the hottest days of summer.

Tsckey:
Your statement "Delvac 1 is not lighter than Amsoil 15-40" confuses me.
I'm no "Oil Expert", but what I've learned and understand, 5W40 is made from 5W basestock, and 15W40 is made from a 15W basestock, (flow charactoristics @ 0 Deg C). Both oils have the flow charactoristic of a 40W at 100 Deg C.
What don't I understand? Thanks for any input.

jmcgmc03:
I am using the Amsoil BMK17 Dual Remote Bypass. A couple of years ago, this was one of the few out there. Today, there are others available, that some recommend, but I know little about. Mine seems to be working good, with continued good oil analysis at 10K miles. I have no regrets, but can't recommend one over the other.

I just did an oil change this weekend. I used Amsoil 15W-40. It should flow better in the winter and help overall wear. I plan to change only the filter and top off at the next 5,000 and start over again in 10,000 miles.

As a side note, I installed a Fumoto F-106N drain valve. Without it the oil ran all over the skid plate and out everywhere. The valve has a nipple end that you could put a hose on and direct the flow, or by itself I think it will clear the skid plate. The down side is that it that it will take longer for all the oil to get out.

I change mine out every 5k during the summer, and 7,500 during the winter.. During the winter I don't tow, and there is a lot less dust in the air to get sucked through the filter.. I'm also running Rotella T.

Mark I found a quick fix for this.. After filling up the skid plate with oil on my first oil change I took my trusty SAW ZAW and cut the corner off of the skid plate. Both my 6.0L trucks had the same problem.

USA-1 you can get a fumoto from Kennedy Diesel or Lube Specialist (both DP advertisers) or do a Google search for the Fumoto home page. Get the one with the nipple.

We sell the Fumoto F-106N for a few pennies over twenty three bucks. You can find my shop info at HDiesel.com.

Not an advertising ploy, just stating what worked for me. Idle Chatter is correct in suggesting that it is always a good idea to support the advertisers here.

I have a question on the Futomo drain valve. When inserted into the oil pan, is the valve flush inside the pan to allow all the oil to drain out? Just curious. Thanks. HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL THE MEMBERS.

ZL-1: can't be sure without looking on the *inside* of a pan with the Fumoto installed, but as I recall the length of the Fumoto threads seemed pretty close to the depth of the bushing on the oil pan. Not a big factor anyway, because the drain tap is not on the lowest point on the pan and there's a small layer of oil left even with an OEM plug! ;)
