View Full Version : Black Soot on Bumper
Pulled the 4000 lb boat yesterday about 100 miles and we I got home, I noticed that the bottom of the fender and edge of the bumper was cover in the black soot from the exhaust. Changed the Air Filter 2000 miles ago. I recon my question is do I have a problem or is this normal. 19,000 miles on truck and seems to be runing fine.
Mine has a the same.
Don't worry about it, it's a diesel thingy.
Unless, it's REALLY sooty like a chimney...then you need to check it out.

A colleague of mine has the same problem with his '01. My '01 has never had the problem. We are both in the mid 30's for mileage. His truck also has had problems with low mileage and lack of power on occasion. I'm guessing he might be having an injector problem.
Thanks for the reply. I sure hope I don't have the injector problem, this hadn't happen before, so I was just wondering why it has just now started it. Wait and see I suppose.
This is one of the reasons that I redirected my tailpipe so that it blows more out and away. This setup minimizes the buildup, but it can still accumulate...
John Kennedy also has plenty of extra length so you can cut it back to where you want if you want.

I have had the same problem with my 02. When towing, the whole RS of my 5th wheel was sooty. Put a 4" turn down on the tailpipe and solved it. Also it made the exhaust quieter.
