It's true! They are going to raise it! I just got back from the American Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio. It is a three week giant horse event. It is sponsered by GMC. I bought my 02 there last year. They sell a couple hundred trucks (GMC's) during that time. They have about three hundred trucks for sale. They also have other vendors and dealers there(Ford & Dodge's) Great deals. They also have two GM factory reps at the show with displays and trucks. The Factory guys are GM & Izussu Duramax & allison experts. They did a lot of the original testing and also do the warranty investigations of failed parts. They said that the motor is capable of almost 600 HP just like it sits, with just computer changes. Although it will take other mods to keep egt's in the safe ranges. They said that the 2004 Duramax will have more HP & torque. To answer Ford and Dodge's recent HP hike. GM will just do there hike via the computer. They said it will be about 40 or 50 Hp increase. They might also do some slight mods to the allison at that time in order to handle the increase HP if they go bigger. But they said it will most likely stay in the current ratings that the allison is rated to handle . They also said that there will be significant changes to the body style as well in 04. If your in the Columbus, OH area, go and check it out. They are at the State Fair grounds. And it runs thru the 27th of this month. I hope that sheds some light on the 04 season for you. Stay safe and keep trucking! "Bill" PS. I was talking to a trans guy there later this week, who told me that the allison is capable of being a six speed. He said it would need different computer programing some additional parts, like another servo and so on. He said there is another planet gear set already in there, and that maybe it will happenin the future. Although he wasn't a factory guy. He did sound like he knew what he was talking about. See Ya.

Let the Horsepower War continue! :D

It makes sense for GM/Duramax LTD to step up the
output in increments based on the competition. In
fact I'm surprised that GM didn't increase the
ratings for the 2003 trucks after the new Cummins
was announced.

I'm guessing it will be 340 HP/575 Ft Lbs. for
2004 (mid-year 2003 release).

Sounds like we'll be driving tanks if this HP/Torque war continues for long - it'll take massive driveline components to handle it all...

(sob) (sob) I guess my 300hp will be WOEFULLY underpowered in a year... (sob) (sob)

So are they adding a variable vane turbo to get that extra HP? Or just a computer upgrade.

What was up with the major 2004 body style change? They just screwed the things up in 2003. Trying to make up for the mistake?

I will welcome a transmission with a double overdrive with open arms. No use wasting the power. I'm gonna groan when I start hearing the complaints about the trucks shifting out of double overdrive on a hill with a load though

So what you're saying is that the '03 reminds you of this?

Me too. :D

(Found this on the TDR.)

I'd agree the '03 Chevy is not as attractive as the '02, but it hardly looks like that picture.

I think the '03 Dodge "Melted Grill" kinda reminds me of the Griswold's infamous vacation wagon, a lot taller than necessary... ;)

Fast Forward 10 years:.......

The new 2012 Duramaxs'have been announced...
among other things the improvements include drag slicks, a tailgate mounted parachute, rollcage, 4 point seat belts, titanium drive shaft, etc. A optional rear wing to keep the back of the truck on the ground can be added....

Sounds good to me....except it is slightly exaggerated.

I was also at the AQHA World Congress again this year. I was one of the guys working the GMC display (The one who was involved in testing and warranty investigation) and although it is true that GM plans on increasing the power for the '04 model year, I don't believe I quoted an actual number (because I don't know the number yet).

They are going with a veriable vain turbo and they will also do some with the computer but I don't know what the final number will be.

One of the other product specialists, Chris, who is working that display all week (I just do the weekends) used to work for Campbell-Ewald (the company that put on the Duramax Diesel Power Tour for GM) and he said that they are using Duramax's for tow vehicles on several of their tours now. He and I have both had experience towing very heavy loads with Duramax's and are well impressed.

I also don't know what he meant by the body changes for '04. We were doing a GMC show and GMC has a great looking front end for '03.

If anyone in Columbus area, I will be back there this weekend and along with the 3500 D-Max, we also have a Quad steer truck on display this year.

Good Idea,
Lets see.....How about 1500 HP through an Allison Trans!!

It will take some sheet metal changes but it is possible......EGTs are a bitch though!

If they are going to use a variable vane turbo, I wonder what the airflow capacity and pressure ratio/compressor map will look like compared to the turbo we NOW have.
Does anybody HAVE a compressor map for our current turbo??

Ideally they would use the variable vane setup to improve lowend boost response, while TOTALLY MAINTAINING or IMPROVING top-end airflow/pressure ratio performance. If they decide the current turbo has "too much size" and laggy boost response they might ALSO make the turbo SMALLER/less capable of ultimate airflow and so make those of us with Juice etc NOT want to switch because we might end up needing to swap out turbos all the time like the Cummins etc people need to, to get high performance...

D-max Man, or anybody else that may know: if the 2004's get some of their increased HP via computer mods, would the rest of us be able to find out these codes and reflash our computers? Just thinking of a less expensive way to get power without having to buy Juice et al. At $700.00 these mods get pricy.
