Fumoto Oil Drain Valve

Does anyone have an opinion on changing to a oil drain valve? I'm curious if not having a magnetized drain plug outways the convenience of the Fumoto valve.

Is the OEM drain plug in fact magnatized? If it is not, its history. Has anyone noticed a grey matalic slim on the plug when changing oil?

When I pulled mine last week for the first drain it did not have any thing on it like it was a magnetic plug. I put the Fumotovalve on at that time. Looking forward for an easy drain. If you have not heard the oil filter is a gut buster. Mine took a strap wrench two hands and one foot on the frame to get it loose.

I too use a Fumoto valve on all of my trucks. To address the magnetic drain plug ( or lack of ) I duct tape a couple of strong magnets to the outside of my oil filters. I can't tell you if they help much but it does make me feel like I am trying to help the situation.

Just checked the original drain plug off my 2001 duramax........it definately is not magnetic!!
I changed to a Fumoto w/nipple after the first oil change........if you have a front skid plate you will find that it holds about a quart of dirty deisel oil, and it will undercoat your truck as you drive down the road.......all at no extra charge of course.

Wakely, the Fumoto is a brass ball valve (with a spring-locked handle) that replaces your oil drain plug. It allows a cleaner and simpler oil pan drain (especially the one with nipple if you have skid plates). Runs about $25 and you can get it from Greg Landuyt www.lubespecialist.com or Kennedy Diesel www.kennedydiesel.com I'm on my second Fumoto on my second vehicle and I love it.

For the record, the drain plug on my 02 isn't magnetized. Hope the filter is doing its job. Still hearing people claim to have magnetic ones. It'd be nice I suppose. Now I'm wondering about the differential drains and the transfer case drains.

With all the crazy people in this world today, I would worry that one of them could play a really bad joke by flipping the lever on the valve and draining your oil. then what?

I haven't found one of those crazy people under my truck yet looking to open the fumato! If they did, I think you might notice 10 quarts of oil at your feet when you get in your truck. You can alway's put a wire tie or piece of wire on it if you feel it will pop open. Face it, if someone wants to pull a prank on you like that they will get a wrench and do it also.

Oh Oh I've got the skid plate on my 03 and will do the first oil change when I get my fumoto from john. Any thoughts on how I can funnel that oil away on the first change before installing the fumoto? thanx jim

Jelisfc, the nippled valve will be fine without skid plates. The nipple is a nice option to have.. Just install a 12" piece of 3/8 or 5/16 hose and drain the system. No splashing, no mess.

Cold front, there's two options to change out the oil mess free with the skid plates- one, remove the plate, and the oil will drain out without hitting anything. The second option is to bend up a piece of sheetmetal or even cardboard to provide a trough for the oil to flow down. Note- make sure you've got a 16mm 6 point socket to remove the drain plug. It'll be very tight, and the oil will flow out with much force, so use caution- you may get a shower of oil (like I have :( )

Angie82, I'd be more concerned of a twig or rock coming up and opening the valve before someone sabotaging my truck. The likelyhood of either happening is very slim, IMHO. The sky could fall tomorrow too, but I doubt it'll happen.. :D ;)

Jelisfc, there's no hangage issue. The valve has a size of about 1" square and the nipple is ahout 3/4" long. The whole assembly doesn't hang down much below the bottom of the oil pan and that is up quite a ways and way above the crossmember.

On my Fumoto valve, I use a small tie wrap and tighten it into the slot that the valve lever rotates 90 degrees in. This takes care of any inadvertent opennings from debris hitting the lever. It is very secure. The disadvantage is that I have to cut the tie wrap when I change oil. A peace of mind though. Still does not prevent someone with a small cutter from purposely openning the valve.

We have and optional stainless steel clip. If you use that no one will open it unless they have a pair of pliers.

Check out www.filtermag.com. They have magnet arrays that clamp onto the filter. I have a Fumoto valve on mine and plan to get the Filtermag product. My main concern with the valve is catching the lever on something and opening the valve. I put a screw type hose clamp on the lever barrel to prevent this from happening.

Greg is right- the SS clamp works great. You need pliars to get it off and even so they need a well serrated jaw or they slide off. Mine is very secure.

The Fumoto valve works excellent compared to the RUSH of fluid when the drain plug is removed as with the stock drain plug.....

That safety clamp is just a regular hose clamp,nothing special....

Someone would have to know you even have a valve to even crawl under ....... :rolleyes: You guys must have locking valve stem caps too,paronia will destroy ya ...... ;) :eek:

Worrying about someone draining my oil by opening my "unprotected" Fumoto valve is so far down my list of things to worry about....I haven't even gotten to the point of thinking about whether I should be worried about it. :eek: :eek: :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

I for one always watch my oil pressure come up anyhow.I know I'd notice a 10 quart oil slick as well as no pressure.No worries here.
