dumb question

I grew up farming and have driven many different types of semi's and trucks but I've never seen anything like the plasic box on a hose on top of my new Duramax. You know, the one that says "6.6 Turbodiesel". There appears to be one large hose going into it. What does it do?

The black cover you are referring to is an intake resonator to reduce/modify the sound of the turbo. My 98 6.5TD also had one. IIRC, some folks have experimented with removing them and haven't noticed much if any difference in sound. Try a search on intake resonator or engine cover for more info & discussion.
