View Full Version : scan tool Actron CP9145 opinion
I saw an article around here explaining the process
of diagnosing a bad injector. I believe it mentions
the Tech II scan tool, but I was wondering if a not
so expensive scan tool like the Actron CP9145 can
do the job equally as well. Does anyone have any
experience with this tool or can give advice about
its capabilities? The specs for the tool is at

Btw, here is the procedure described for testing
the injectors. So, I guess I'm asking if that
Actron tool can monitor the data 1 data mentioned
below.
This is a prety simple diagnosis if it is fuel. The
injector won't pop till 2500 psi.If you monitor fuel
rail pressure you will probably notice it won't start
till it reaches 2500(read extended crank)On A tech 2
scan tool, data 1, find fuel regulator return in ml
cubbed.(sp) It should be 800-1400 mm3 at idle warm. If
it reads higher than this there is an injector
returning to much fuel.(It could also be a regulator
but not as likely) First you narrow down which bank
then which injector. The spec I believe is 20ml in 15
seconds of cranking per bank and 4-6 ml per
injector.(not positve). Many make the mistake of
replacing the bad injector and not retesting the fuel
return. Once you fix a gross leak you must retest
because the rail pressure is now higher. This is why
many trucks get one injector replaced and then a week
later need another one.The other injector was probably
bad also but didn't show up because of the gross leak
dropping rail pressure.
You can also monitor theft status on scan tool if you
suspect this.
I bought a 9145 because it claimed to show "extended" codes or something to that effect. While it is probably a great tool, it didn't show all of the codes or real-time data that I was expecting. I returned it and ordered an interface that connects to a laptop's serial port. There are files available for different motors that allow you to view the enhanced real time data base streams. Once you've got the interface, you can download files for other motors. The software has graphs and gauges and does logging, and runs on a 386 or higher with just about any version of Windows from 3.1 to XP.
It's not as convenient as a handheld tool like the 9145, but it's a whole lot more useful.

Dave,
May I ask what you used the software for? Or, maybe
another way of asking the question is, what were
you hoping to monitor/read that the Actron tool
couldn't? Do you know if you would be able to
monitor the return fuel pressure from the injectors?
Btw, thanks for the link. For $120+, it doesn't
seem to bad. However, that website could use a lot
of work...tough to follow. :(
The Autoenginuity scan tool (software) looks good too ... I haven

I have the CP9145 but bought it for servicing my wifes Catera and works great. The CP9145 will give you limited info on the Duramax such as Fuel Rail pressure, MAF sensor, rpm, coolant temp, and vehicle speed. For the price I didn't expect it would give you much more than it does.

Dave I went to that website and it looks like a good product, but how the heck would you know what to order? :( There are no descriptions that I can understand, and maybe that means I shouldn't operate one, but good grief a little english woulda helped. Ihave an 01 DMAX, an '04 Sub w/6.0L & a '96 Caprice LT1 (ODBII) that I could use this thing on, but I don'thave a clue as to what Ineed to buy.

I have The Autoenginuity scan tool and so far am pretty pleased with it. I originally got it to Keep a eye on my tranny which was giving me fits. Narrowed the problem done in about two minutes to a trim solenoid. But make sure you get the extended coverage and download the update that did not come with the shipped software/hardware package

Btw, thanks for the link. For $120+, it doesn't

of work...tough to follow. :( One of the things I wanted to see was injector balance rates. I wanted to be able to read and reset codes if needed and see details that would help me understand what's going on if I need or want to diagnose something. I guess it was curiosity and wanting to have a cool tool more than anything.
I'll try to get around to plugging it in this weekend and see if I can get some specifics for you. I know the one I have shows more than the 9145, and about the same things that the Diablo Predator shows. Of course, it won't do any reprogramming like the Predator.

JP Yeah, I know the web site doesn't make it easy. I emailed the guy telling him what I have and confirming what I needed. You'll probably need the VPW, same as me. If you click the order link, then click PayPal (what I used), you'll see a list of options. The Credit Cards link appears to be the same.

Here are the enhanced codes that the Car Code scan tool browser displays for the LLY. There's no printable list, you have to select each code and it shows the description. I entered the descriptions for some of the codes. Some of them you can kinda guess at from the initials.
From what I remember, the 9145 does not display these codes, but if anyone else finds out it does, let me know.
