Fuel $$$

Diesel prices in this area have been falling for the last few weeks. As a result, we have the largest gap between prices charged by stations within a relatively small distance of each other that I have ever seen. In the Raleigh, NC prices range from $1.559 to $1.699. Not too long ago there were several threads giving the high cost of fuel....highest I saw here was $1.919. Just wondering what the prices are accross the country and if everyone is seeing a decline in cost? ... Jim

Within 10 miles of in town driving I can currently pay $1.69 or $1.43 for diesel.

The stations at $1.69 used to be fair priced stations./ Currently they are getting about $1.52 for high test!!! 17 cents a gallon more than high test for diesel!! Tell me these guys aren't crooks!

The fuel prices around here have been coming down too but not fast enough.
We peaked at about 2.05 over the winter and its down to about 1.75 a gallon now.
The oil companies always have some BS execuse for raising prices. Either it's winter time and they have to make more home heating oil , which is the same as diesel anyway, or its summer time and more people are driving and that keeps the supplies low and prices up.
Same BS every year.
Some one tell me why diesel is more expensive to buy than gasoline.
Diesel is cheaper to produce, it's less refined than gas
And theres less road taxes on it, at least in this state.
Yet you go to the gas station and gas is 1.61 a gallon and diesel is 1.77 BS BS BS BS BS BS BS

And another thing why do CD's cost more to buy in the record store than casette's.
CD's are cheaper to produce and they still charge you about $5.00 more than a cassette.
Look at all the CD's AOL wastes I get about two a week from them offering 1072 hours free time.
So if there giving away that many CD's cant be that expensive to produce.

The truckstop outside of town is $1.29 and the place I used to fuel all the time is at $1.49. They are 10.7 miles apart. The strange thing, that I cannot understand is the truckstop is giving me between .5 and 1 mpg less than the place in town. At 1 mpg and the extra driving, I break even on a tank, even with a 30 cent delta. :confused: I am sticking to the truckstop since I just added my mega and I want to see a mileage comparison. I use Stanadyne and Amsoil Cetane boost in every tank regardless of where I fuel. Why is the truckstop showing lower?

I was in Wilmington, DE today. Needed fuel and saw it for $1.99...and I just kept driving by. Around here it's about $1.65 now, peaked about $1.95 a few weeks ago.

I went to Mo. last week. I bought fuel in Mo. for $1.35, in Ark. for $1.32 and in Ms. for $1.29. These were the lowest I found in each location. It is $1.39 at home. COME ON DOWN!

Fuel in Washington State is down to $1.50 per gallon :confused: Our Gov wants to add .05 or .10 additional tax.

.5 to 1MPG is not even noticable to normal people, but knowing you, you'd pick up on it. Your not this way with the family are you?
Seriously when splitting hairs this fine one of the things you have to ensure is fuel density. I'd be willing to bet that the fuel with the lower mileage has a lower density.

I've found the Flyin J to normally be a few cents less than the T/A, but the savings are not worth the drive to me.

I try REALLY hard not to be that way with my family, after all, ther are only human. ;)

One tank or two, I wouldn't have thought much, but as an average over 5 tanks, it was noticable when graphed. Yes, I chart my mileage per tank, lifetime and last 10 tanks. I am been thinking about adding the last 5 as well. :rolleyes: I also calculate cents per mile cost for fuel, mph on each tank and lifetime, blah blah blah. I must admit it, I am a GEEK redface.gif I even charted my wife's contractions an predicted the time of my daughters birth within 5 minutes. :D Believe it or not, my best friend is more retentive than I am. :eek:

Filled up last week at $1.59. Right now it seems to range between $1.59 and $1.89 for diesel in my area. Better than $2.00 gal a couple of mounths ago. Regular unleaded is around $1.84 and super is about $1.99.

It's currently $1.39 per gallon for diesel fuel in East Tennessee along Interstate 40 and 81 and dropping every week.

OK, of all the posts so far, I've seen the least expensive fuel!!! $1.26 at Loves and Citgo truck stops. The Phillips 66 across the highway is holding out at $1.28, but they will succumb before long! I like seeing the $.20 delta between diesel and regular unleaded. Having trouble wiping the grin from my face!!! :D

Seriously, JP4 is 6.2 lbs per gallon, JP8 6.8. What I fly burns both at the same rate when it is calculated in LBS. per hour. If you calculate in Gallons per hour the JP8 gives better endurance as it's a denser fuel. I'm speculating that different brands of Diesel may have different densities.
I've forgotten their names but there a couple of petroleum engineers that post from time to time that may be able to tell us.

I could have it tested I guess. I have the results from my other station that I did before starting the extra filter saga. I hate to spend the $50, but it is an interesting question. :confused:

I could also do a post Mega sample instead of an at the pump and see how my particles look. ;)

I wouldn't be $50 curious myself. I don't know where you would get one, but the specific gravity of fuel is easy to determine. A glass graduated cylinder is floated in a column of fuel and the line that it floats at is read. When it is corrected for temp the exact specific gravity is known.
Many moons ago I Drag raced motorcycles, If we set a record one of the things that you had to do was give up a fuel sample and the officials would determine the specific gravity in front of you. Apparently illegal Oxygen bearing additives affected the specific gravity, I don't know which way but "legal" fuel had to fall within a certain range.
Again I believe that someone out there will chime in and tell us the range for Diesel etc., or I could be completly off and the fuel in question may have a lower BTU for gallon for an entirely different reason.

As of Wednesday May 7, in Southern Vt the best prices are 1.699. In central Massachusetts, saw Mobil and Sunoco diesel at 1.599. In central NJ, saw Mobil diesel at 1.479, and "no brand" diesel about a nickel less.
