View Full Version : Does production date matter?

I'm looking into buying a preowned '01, my only concern is the injectors! I read a post on TDP that most of injector problems come from early production date models. The production stamp on the door is 06/03. Is this any better, or is it just a crap shoot? :confused: Thanks MTNHICO

MTN, I dont think that is the production date as if its an 01 it would have been made in 00 or early 01.

WhiteDuramax,not sure what else it could be? I know it wasn't sold till 11/03, if that means anything? How has your'01 been treating you?

It has been pretty good with the exception of the turbo it is getting right now. A word of advice, dont plug the wastegate! Otherwise it has been great with 71,000 miles on it.

I'm guessing that the truck has a new door.. No way they produced a '01 model truck in June 2003. Check to see if it was in an accident, that door is probably from an auto wrecker.

Did it spin out the tailpipe?? Or is it a longevity issue as plugging over works the turbo resulting in premature failure ??

MTN--Look on the frame right under the doors and see if there is a sticker there. This will have the production date on it also, if the sticker hasn't fell off. There is no way the 6/03 on the door is the production date of an 01 model.

Unless somebody switched doors....

The trim and mirror would be different though unless they switched that as well. Don't know where someone would find an '03 door this soon unless there was an unlucky donor at the junkyard already. just a thought.

Well a 6/01 date is about the end of the '01 model year before they start producing the 2002's. Not sure about the injector issues, but possibly it was resolved by that time??

Minn-kota, wish I could believe the injector problem was solved by then, but from what I've read on TDP I'm just not willing to take my chances on a '01 truck. I plan on having this truck a long time! Maybe best to wait? :confused:

MtnHiCO,I don't know if it would help in your case, but my '01 is an August build and I've been essentially trouble-free for 65,000 miles. I had the serpentine belt tensioner bearing fail and the TCM programming update for the "harsh downshift to first" and that's it! I was pleased to find that my truck missed most of the '01 issues and came with the modified airbox and a one-piece steel driveshaft.

MTN---That makes more sense. My truck is a 06/01 productions model and it is just as idle--chatter decribed his truck. I only have 28,000 on mine, it has not given me one headache. Keeping my fingers crossed. It does have the steering rattle, but have not taken it in for that problem, will before the 36,000 mark. Good luck on what ever you deceide to buy.

Ram, Don't forget about the 36 month part!
That one has bit ALOT of folks. Think they have 36k miles and take it to the dealer at 38 months to get a fix... The stealer says NO GO! I witnessed this last week when I took my company van in for an oil change. The lady had a 3/36 on the car. The car only had 30k on the odo. BUT she had the car for 38 months. She put off bringing it in for 3 months and it cost her close to 800 buck to fix the air that hadn't worked right for "quite some time" according to her...

Mac, nothing came out the exhaust that I know of, I would have to say too much boost,cause I havent had it plugged that long, maybe a couple monthes. I will know more in a couple days, as to what exactly failed.
